In her first regular television series commitment since her breakout role as the star of My So-Called Life, Claire Danes has agreed to take on the starring role in Homeland, a new thriller created by 24 mastermind Howard Gordon that’s loosely based on the Israeli television series Prisoners of War by Gideon Raff.
The Showtime series centers on Sergeant Scott Brody, an American soldier that was taken captive during an invasion in Iraq many years ago. When Brody returns to his home country several years later after being released from custody, a lone CIA agent begins to suspect that the soldier’s return is a setup, and that this man currently being championed as a hero could very well be the country’s greatest threat. Danes will play Carrie Anderson, the CIA officer that finds herself suspicious of the soldier’s true loyalties.
Michael Cuesta is directing based on a script written by Gordon, Raff and co-producer Alex Gansa, with production on the pilot episode expected to begin in January. Ben Affleck was expected to direct Homeland at one point, but he’s apparently no longer in the running.
