The 1941 Orson Welles classic Citizen Kane is joining the acclaimed Criterion Collection in November, but the new cover art is garnering some less-than-stellar reactions online. The Criterion Collection cover art for Citizen Kane features a large, stylized "K" on a solid black background. This quickly began circulating on Twitter, with numerous fans mocking the minimalist look.
Considered by many to be one of the greatest movies of all time, Citizen Kane was directed and co-written by Orson Welles, who played the film's protagonist, Charles Foster Kane. The plot revolves around Kane's dying word -- Rosebud -- and utilizes flashbacks to explore how he evolved from a poor boy to a ludicrously successful newspaper tycoon to an eventual recluse. The film was notable at the time of its release for rejecting linear storytelling and using then-cutting-edge cinematography, sound and makeup techniques.
To this day, Citizen Kane is still widely regarded as a masterclass in filmmaking, and it only recently lost its perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes thanks to the reemergence of an 80-year-old negative review.
