Produced by acclaimed Marvel Cinematic Universe directors Joe and Anthony Russo, Prime Video has placed a great deal of resources into Citadel. The show is being described as a "global event series," comprising of the English-language core show as well as "several local language satellite series" based in India, Spain, Mexico and the Italian Alps. Sources close to the project claim that due to a variety of production difficulties, Citadel's budget ballooned to approximately $250 million dollars, making it the second most expensive TV series ever made. The only one that beats it is Prime Video's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, which cost $465 million.

Citadel Is a Gigantic Story

Speaking about why the show is likely to find an audience amongst enthusiasts of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, producer Joe Russo discussed the similarities between Citadel and his various superhero creations. "This is high-octane. It's really propulsive storytelling. There's a lot of action in it, and there's a lot of adventure in it," the filmmaker said. "There are a lot of twists and turns. The ambition and the scale of it are massive -- and MCU fans like immersive storytelling. My brother and I love immersive storytelling."

For his part, Madden echoed these sentiments noting that while Citadel is loaded with explosive action, there's a deceptively romantic core underneath all the gunshots and explosions. "As [Citadel] progresses, I think you find his real motivation -- his love, which is expressed [poorly], I think," Madden said. "And then, on the flip side, I get to play Kyle, who's connected to all that romance and love on the forefront."

Citadel premieres on Prime Video on April 28 with new episodes dropping every Friday.
