Amazon Prime's high-stakes spy thriller, Citadel, harnesses the use of its incredible cast and characters to tell exciting and engaging stories. With a riveting focus on quiet moments amidst the action-packed sequences, the show quickly differentiates from others in the genre, bringing something fresh and nuanced to the small screens.

From the noteworthy Russo Brothers, Citadel stars Stanley Tucci, Richard Madden, Priyanka Chopra, Lesley Manville, and more in a gritty new series that's the jumping-off point for international successors from Italy and India. In a conversation with CBR, series creator David Weil discussed the pacing, spin-offs, and the episode he's most excited for fans to see.

CBR: We got to watch the first three episodes, and the series is incredibly fast-paced and action-packed, but at the same time, there are some really fascinating character-driven moments. What inspired the slower character development and that focus?

David Weil: Everything for me. What I think is so thrilling about [Citadel] is that you have different languages by which to describe [the] characters -- there are, of course, great emotional moments and more traditional drama. Then you have this high-octane action thriller, and through the action, the physical violence, and the weaponry, you also get to express character. How characters change, evolve, and show who they are -- falling in love [and] out of love. That was really fun, and I feel like we got to play many instruments in this series. We wanted to create a thrill ride for the audience while still ensuring that it was really all about the characters, as all good TV is.

Is there anything you can tease about how many seasons you'd possibly like to tell the full story of your choosing?

In creating this first season, the grand ambition and the hope are that we get a few more to tell the story. There's so much story to tell, and I think one of the other cool things about this entire Citadel universe is that at the same time that we've been making our series, incredible Italian filmmakers and cast are creating their series; brilliant Indian filmmakers and cast are creating theirs. We've woven this web of stories. Working with our incredible International partners, every other week, we have [a] global writers' room where we get to talk about the history of these characters, the futures -- where they could go if we get more seasons. It's been a blast. It's been a real gift.

What's the episode you are most looking forward to for fans to see? Without spoilers.

Episode 6! The finale episode. I can't say anymore but definitely the final episode.

Citadel premieres exclusively on Prime Video with two episodes starting April 28 and a new episode every Friday.
