After a few weeks of intense speculation, director Gareth Edwards’ Star Wars spinoff has finally rounded out its creative team.
The Hollywood Reporter has word that the stand alone film set in George Lucas’ galaxy far, far away will now employ the talents of Chris Weitz. The screenwriter and director has a deep and varied resumé that includes big budget CGI-heavy features like Disney’s incoming Cinderella, The Golden Compass and The Twilight Saga: New Moon. He also received an Academy Award nomination for his work on the screen version of About A Boy, which he also co-directed.
The spinoff feature from the Godzilla director has been without a screenwriter since Gary Whitta exited earlier this month. Speculation had placed X-Men franchise player Simon Kinberg at the top of the replacement list, but as THR notes, the film has had a high number of screenwriting turnovers.
The first stand alone sequel in the Star Wars franchise is set to arrive on December 16, 2016, a year after The Force Awakens hits theaters.
