Writer-director Kay Cannon's jukebox musical take on Cinderella, premiering on Amazon Prime in Sept. 2021, offers a first look at Billy Porter's "Fab G," a reinvention of Cinderella's fairy godmother.

Entertainment Weekly published the first image of the Emmy-winning Pose star in costume playing the stylish, magical being who transcends human labels. "Billy articulated the idea [that] magic has no gender," said Cannon.

Cinderella Billy Porter Fab G Fairy Godmother

Cannon says that casting Porter was the "easiest thing" in the film's whole production process. According to Cannon, the gender non-conforming reimagining of the traditional fairy godmother role helps this version of the story stand out from previous Cinderella tellings.

Porter's big musical number is being kept under wraps for now, but Cannon notes that it has been changed from "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" in the original script to something particularly suited for Porter's talents. "I think it's only like 12 minutes that he's onscreen," Cannon said, but "he'll be your favorite part."

"He fits the role so well. He's so ridiculously talented," Cannon continued. "To me, Billy is magic."

Directed by Kay Cannon, Cinderella stars Camila Cabello as Cinderella, Billy Porter as Cinderella's fairy godparent Fab G, Idina Menzel as Cinderella's stepmother Vivian, Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Robert, Minnie Driver as Queen Beatrice, Pierce Brosnan as King Rowan, and James Corden and John Mulaney as the voices of the mice James and John. Cinderella will release on Amazon Prime Sept. 2021.
