According to Child's Play creator Don Mancini, classic horror villain Chucky will have a new motivation to kill in the upcoming Chucky television show.

Mancini explained in an interview with SyFy Wire that the show will take a look at what it's like to be a modern kid today, with the technology of the 21st century surrounding us. "That's the one thing I think people can look forward to and thinking about: 'How does Chucky operate in a world where kids spend so much of their time on social media?', for example," he stated.

The prospect of seeing Chucky sharpen his skills and add to his toolbox some of the technology we have at our disposal is what Mancini believes people will find most interesting. The importance of keeping up with the times and switching things up has been something he has always tried to incorporate in the franchise over the past few decades. By changing subgenres and creating different tones for each film of the franchise, Mancini has given each one something new to bring to the table, and he looks to follow that consistency with the show.

"It's so important to give Chucky new weapons, new strategies and new targets, new goals," he said. "Chucky has a different goal in the TV show than he's ever had before, and it's specifically something that is designed to evoke something that's going on in the zeitgeist today."

Mancini's mission for the series is to preserve the straightforward scariness of the first couple films of the horror series, while also incorporating these new ideas and characters into the show and seeing how they interact with the old characters fans have grown to know.

The new Chucky television series is set to be a reboot that will take fans back to the beginning: a seemingly idyllic town is haunted by terrible murders after a vintage Chucky doll pops up at a garage sale. The series will elaborate not only on the murderer-to-doll mythos but also on Chucky's transformation from an ordinary child into a monster.

Currently, the cast list includes alums Brad Dourif (Chucky) and Jennifer Tilley (Tiffany). Filming for the eight-episode SyFy series will begin this summer. Until then, fans can watch the original film series on Blu-ray and DVD.
