According to producer John Davis, a sequel is being developed to the found-footage sci-fi thriller Chronicle.

Davis, who produced the first Chronicle, spoke with Forbes about the possibility of a followup. "We’re working on Chronicle 2 right now, and I think it’s going to be great. We’re working on it at Fox (20th Century Studios)," Davis said. "It’s going to give us a chance to tell the story in a different way. We’re going to tell it from the female point of view."

Released in 2012, Chronicle centers on three Seattle high schoolers -- the outcast Andrew (Dane DeHaan), his cousin Matt (Alex Russell) and the popular Steve (Michael B. Jordan) -- who gain telekinetic powers from a mysterious object. Although the trio initially bond over their abilities and use them to pull off harmless pranks, things take a dark turn when Andrew begins employing his powers to lash out at those who previously mistreated or abused him.

"It will have been ten years since the event happened in Seattle, and a lot of it’s going to deal with fake news and real news and cover-ups. More interestingly, it’s the next generation getting these powers that are corruptive," Davis said. "These are young women just finishing college, they are empowered, and this is their journey. I mean, what a new and interesting story you can tell there."

Chronicle was a success upon its release, earning positive reviews and grossing over ten times its $12 million budget. However, despite multiple attempts at making a sequel, Chronicle 2 failed to happen prior to Disney's Fox purchase in 2019. More notoriously, Chronicle writer Max Landis faced allegations of emotional, physical and sexual abuse from eight women in an article published in 2019, leading his personal managers to drop him. Elsewhere, Chronicle director Josh Trank's career stalled after the critical and commercial failure of his Fantastic Four movie reboot in 2015.

As it stands, 20th Century Studios has yet to announce a writer, director, or cast for the current iteration of Chronicle 2. It's one of many projects Davis and his producing partner John Fox are working on, along with a Waterworld sequel series, Taika Waititi's Flash Gordon film and, possibly, a followup to their Disney theme park ride adaptation Jungle Cruise.
