Deathstroke writer Christopher Priest recently discussed his stance of calling Slade Wilson a supervillain, revealing how that led to some disagreements with DC editorial.

In an interview with Newsarama, Priest talked about having to remind DC editors that Slade Wilson is a villain. Priest further explained, "He is an asshole. Slade Wilson is not a nice man. He was never a nice man to begin with. DC’s instinct is to protect their characters, and we’ve gone out of our way protecting Deathstroke, which is what made the finale so satisfying for me as I was finally able to portray Deathstroke the way he should always have been: ruthless, deadly, and totally unlikable. But how long could you sustain a series about someone that despicable?"

Priest continued to talk about how Slade could be incredibly vile, occasionally receiving pushback from DC editorial. One anecdote he referenced was Deathstroke sleeping with his son's fiancee behind his back.

For the most part, however, DC let Priest have his way. He explained, "Oh they'd let me do most of these things ultimately, but only after I reminded that Deathstroke is a villain. Nor a mercenary, not an antihero. He is a full-on jerk and, please write this down someplace, a supervillain."

Deathstroke began in 2016 and concluded with issue #50, which also ended the story arc, Deathstroke: RIP.
