After it appeared that Christopher Nolan's Tenet would keep its July July 17 release date, it has now been announced that the film will be pushed back two weeks to July 31. Instead, another of Nolan's fan-favorite films, Inception, will be shown in theaters on the previous July 17 date.

"We're especially thrilled, in this complex and rapidly changing environment, to be bringing Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, a global tentpole of jaw-dropping size, scope and scale, to theaters around the world on July 31," Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich said in a statement. "It's been longer than any of us could've imagined since we've seen a movie on the big screen, and to acknowledge Chris' fans as we count down to Tenet's opening day, we are also excited to offer his masterpiece Inception in theaters for its 10th anniversary on July 17."

Last week Cinemark CEO Mark Zoardi was confident that Tenet would keep its July 17 date. "We’ve been in close contact with Warner Bros. and they remain optimistic and positive as well as Christopher Nolan about the July 17 opening," Zoardi said.

The Nolan film was set to be one of the first major studio releases to receive a wide theatrical release in four months, since the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic forced studios to alter release dates.

Tenet stars John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Kenneth Branaugh, Dimple Kapadia, Martin Donovan, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Himesh Patel, Clémence Poésy, Denzil Smith and Michael Caine. The film is set for a theatrical release on July 31.
