Former Doctor Who star Christopher Eccleston revealed his plans for the 60th anniversary of the long-running BBC series.

During an appearance at FedCon in June, Eccleston, who has starred as the Ninth Doctor in an ongoing series of audio adventures for Big Finish Productions, confirmed that he had recorded something "special" for the 60th anniversary of Doctor Who. Eccleston recorded the project with veteran actor David Warner, who is also known as the voice of the Unbound Doctor in Big Finish's Doctor Who Unbound series.

"I did something very special for the 60th anniversary and for me it was all about working with this incredible actor an incredible human being called David Warner," Eccleston said. "I think the 60th is my favorite and you're gonna have to wait but it's going to be worked away because David Warner is extraordinary and if any actor should have been the Doctor it would have been David."

In March, Eccleston, who portrayed the Ninth Doctor on television when the series was revived in 2005, addressed whether or not he'd ever return to the screen for the popular BBC sci-fi series. The actor confirmed that he would return to Doctor Who, but on one specific condition. "The Ninth Doctor, in particular, is a one-man band. Definitely, " said Eccleston. "So he doesn’t work with other Doctors. If you want me back, you'd get me on my own."

While Eccleston won't return to the screen, it has been confirmed that David Tennant and Catherine Tate will reprise their respective roles as the Tenth Doctor and fan-favorite companion Donna Noble for the 60th anniversary of Doctor Who in 2023. News of their returns comes after rumors that Tennant would return as the Tenth Doctor in some capacity for the show's anniversary. "I've learned through bitter experience that there's not any point in even answering [questions about whether I'll play the Doctor again] because whatever I say is spun by whoever wants to hear it," Tennant said in April regarding a potential return. "So there's no point in me denying it, there's no point in me confirming it, there's no point in me fudging it. Whatever I say will become whatever the internet wants it to be."

Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa will take over as The Doctor for Season 14, a role held by Jodie Whittaker since 2017. "Ncuti dazzled us, seized hold of the Doctor and owned those TARDIS keys in seconds," said showrunner Russell T. Davies about Gatwa's performance. "It's an honour to work with him, and a hoot, I can’t wait to get started." Davies is credited with reviving BBC's cult, sci-fi drama in 2005 and served as showrunner until Steven Moffat took the reigns in 2009.

Doctor Who Season 14 is expected to debut in 2023.
