Official Press Release
San Diego, CA, June 29, 2004-The Editor-in-Chief position at IDW Publishing, held since January 2003 by Jeff Mariotte, is changing hands in August 2004. The new Editor-in-Chief will be Chris Ryall of Movie Poop Shoot.com.
Mariotte, who joined IDW after a decade at WildStorm Productions, is shifting gears into full time writing. He is a prolific novelist as well as a comic book writer, whose latest book is the first in a 4-book teen horror series called "Witch Season."
Chris Ryall is currently an advertising copywriter and Editor-in-Chief at Movie Poop Shoot.com, Kevin Smith's pop culture website. Previously, he worked for Dick Clark on projects including Stan Lee Media. At Movie Poop Shoot.com, Ryall has developed comic strips and comics with a variety of well-known creators.
"I came to IDW a year and a half ago because I had the greatest respect for the entire crew here, and I wanted to help a small publisher grow into a big one, as I had done at WildStorm," Mariotte said. "Having been here a while, my respect for Ted, Kris, Alex and Robbie has only grown, and I feel like I've accomplished that goal. IDW won Diamond's Gem Award for Publisher of the Year last year, they've had one of the top five bestselling trade paperbacks in the business, they've had remarkable success in everything they've done. If I was some small part of that success, I'm honored to have been included. But the fact is, I'm tired of working seven days a week, trying to keep up with my writing commitments and the editing job as well. Looking ahead, I have several books lined up that will demand my attention. Of course, my relationship with IDW will continue-the company is publishing my Desperadoes series, and I'll be doing other writing jobs for them."
Ryall adds, "I can't wait to join IDW. I respect what Ted Adams and his staff have done with the company, and welcome the chance to work alongside them, as well as Steve Niles, Ashley Wood and the rest of their creators. I'm also very much looking forward to adding to the great legacy that Jeff Mariotte has built in his tenure there. And if Jeff's departure means I'll now have the chance to read even more books and comics written by him, well, that's another bonus for me! I hope everyone comes by and welcomes the new guy at Comic-Con in San Diego."
"I'm really sorry to see Jeff go," said Ted Adams, IDW's Publisher and President. "He's done an amazing job for IDW and has helped build our publishing company over the last year-and-a-half. But he'll still be a part of the IDW family, and I'm anxious to release the new Desperadoes series. Chris was recommended to us by Steve Niles, and I know he's going to be a terrific fit. Jeff and Chris will be working together for several weeks so we will have a seamless transition."
Both Jeff Mariotte and Chris Ryall will be in attendance at the Comic-Con International, San Diego. Mariotte's last day at IDW Publishing will be July 30, while Ryall joins the company on July 13.
