Get your salt shakers ready, because this news needs to be taken with at least a few grains. MGM continues to be in the development stage for a planned RoboCop remake, to which Jose Padilha is attached as director. The word is that the studio has its sights set on Star Trek lead Chris Pine to play the cyborg peace officer, Twitch reports.
Assuming the news is true — bear in mind that there’s no named source — it’s exceedingly early in the process. The word is that folks in the MGM offices want Pine, but Padilha hasn’t signed off on the decision nor has a formal offer been sent out to the actor.
It’s an interesting choice, Pine for the role made famous by Peter Weller in Paul Verhoeven’s original. I can’t say I’m sold on it, but I’m also not ready to scream for blood. He did great work in Star Trek and I can’t see why he wouldn’t be able to handle the action in RoboCop. It will all come down to how the character is handled; the overriding theme in RoboCop is that there’s a no-nonsense, crime-fighting cyborg who occasionally manages to tap into his deeply repressed human memories. Stick to that — Pine can certainly handle it, and then some — and you’re golden.
