Playing off of the news that Disney may be close to acquiring 21st Century Fox, Captain America actor Chris Evans has shared his idea for a new crossover project. And while it's not intended as a serious pitch, there's little doubt fans would flock to see it in theaters.
The actor took to Twitter to jokingly propose a buddy comedy movie in the same vein as Planes, Trains and Automobiles that would star Captain America and the Human Torch. Both roles have been, of course, played by Evans, so even if the actor were serious about it, the movie would be tough to pull off.
So who do I talk to about a Cap/Human Torch buddy comedy spin-off? I’m thinking Planes, Trains and Automobiles meets Parent Trap. https://t.co/3KRPZOVzq2— Chris Evans (@ChrisEvans) December 6, 2017
Long before the Marvel Cinematic Universe came to be, Evans starred as Johnny Storm in Fantastic Four and the sequel Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. In fact, he has been seen in several comic book films, playing Casey Jones in TMNT, Jake Jensen in The Losers and Lucas Lee in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.
The Fantastic Four franchise was only just rebooted with 2015's film, but the new franchise was dead on arrival with abysmal reviews from both fans and critics. If this deal goes through, it would not be surprising to see Disney bring the team into the MCU and restart the franchise all over again.
While it would be great to see Steve Rogers, played by Chris Evans, team up with the Human Torch, also played by Evans, it's probably never going to happen. Even if you discount the obvious joking playfulness in his tweet, Evans' contract with Marvel Studios is set to expire after Avengers 4. Though, come to think of it, stranger deals have been made, so maybe he can negotiate for another go just for this spin-off project.
