Fans excited at the news that Chris Evans will reprise his role as Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe may want to temper their celebrations, as the star has now cast some doubt at the reports.Evans posted a message on his Twitter account that reads, "News to me." He also included a shrug emoticon, insinuating that the news of his Captain America return is just reaching him for the first time. Evans has gone on the record numerous times that he retired as Captain America following Avengers: Endgame.RELATED: Chris Evans Auctioning Signed Captain America Shield, Video Message for Charity

It was reported earlier in the day that Chris Evans' return as Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, would be for a future MCU project in some capacity, with a second project also a possibility. The terms of the deal were also reportedly for a co-starring or guest appearance similar to Robert Downey Jr. in Captain America: Civil War and Spider-Man: Homecoming, and not a fourth installment in the Captain America film franchise. It was reported that Evans and Marvel Studios negotiated an agreement at the beginning of the year. If Evans were to return, it is unknown if it would be as Old Man Steve Rogers, or in Cap's more youthful state.

There were rumors in February 2019 that Marvel offered Evans that chance to work behind the camera on a potential MCU project. This allegedly would be for Evans to direct a few episodes of the various limited series that Marvel is bringing to Disney+. The first installment, WandaVision, debuts Jan. 15.

Of course, this isn't the first time an actor has denied an MCU casting report. Tatiana Maslany -- who starred in Orphan Black as Sarah Manning from 2013 to 2017 -- denied being cast in the titular role for Disney+'s live-action She-Hulk series in October 2020.

Chris Evans famously passed the Captain America shield to Sam Wilson (Falcon) in the ending moments of Avengers: Endgame. Steve Rogers returned from placing the Infinity Stones back to their proper places in the past as an old man, thus retiring from being a superhero. This set up the events of Disney+'s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, with the titular heroes coming to grips with Cap's legacy.
