Chip Zdarsky Teaches You How to Draw (Kinda) in New Marvel Variants

Marvel Comics has announced a new slew of humorous variant covers that cast comics writer Chip Zdarsky in the role of sage art instructor. The 20 variants, which are scheduled to release this fall, will teach readers how to draw some of Marvel's most recognizable characters in six easy steps and as told by Zdarsky – who, again, is a writer.

“I don’t know about everybody out there in Mighty Marveldom, but when I first started collecting comics, one of my hobbies was trying to draw my favorite Marvel heroes and villains,” Editor Devin Lewis said in a statement. “Carrying on the grand tradition of the classic How to Draw Marvel Comics is this series of How-To Variants by Chip Zdarsky, one of the most… unique?... voices in comics today. In addition to giving really accurate instructions about how to draw each of these characters, Chip’s bringing his brand of humor to each and every piece, and we can promise that whether you’re a Marvel fan old or new, at least one of these ‘em will give you a chuckle!”

Zdarsky's drawing instructions first appeared on the back of a blank variant cover for Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man #1 in June. The variant tasked the reader with drawing Spider-Man's mask, but eventually devolved into a rant about how hard it is to actually draw Spider-Man. The upcoming variants look to be similarly inspired.

“I don’t really know how to draw so this whole thing feels quite irresponsible,” Zdarsky said. Zdarsky's work at Marvel Comics includes writing credits for series like Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man, Howard the Duck and Star-Lord. Zdarsky is also the creator of Prison Funnies and Monster Cops. He is the co-creator of Sex Criminals with Matt Fraction, a project on which he served as head artist (so, all fun aside, Zdarsky is clearly a multifaceted creator).
