The cover, which was released by Syfy Wire, prominently features the titular teenage witch, Sabrina Spellman, as well as a vivid black-and-red aesthetic that harkens back to iconic horror movie posters such as that of 1984's Children of the Corn or 2016's Blair Witch.
Written by Sarah Rees Brennan, Season of the Witch goes on sale July 9 and will take place in the summer before the events of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season 1.
"We are publishing the successful Riverdale [books based on The CW] show from Archie Comics, so when we heard that the same showrunners and producers were creating Sabrina, we jumped on it right away," Scholastic VP/Publisher of Licensed Publishing Debra Dorfman said. "We just loved everything they're doing with the show. We love the whole girl power angle and so we're just very excited and this is the perfect genre for us."
"[The readers are] definitely gonna get a lot of extra story development, a lot of behind-the-scenes, a lot of insights," she continued. "It's like lore that they would not get from just watching the TV show. When you make a TV show, there's only so much you can do, you have a limited [amount] of time. With the book, we could take a deep dive into the character and just expand the storyline."
"We are going to have at least, we hope, three novels," said Dorfman. "They'll be different formats, we're doing handbooks and guidebooks and character studies and fun potions and we'll see. We're just exploring that right now."
Streaming now on Netflix, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina stars Kiernan Shipka as Sabrina Spellman, Ross Lynch as Harvey Kinkle, Michelle Gomez as Mary Wardwell/Madam Satan, Jaz Sinclair as Rosalind Walker, Lachlan Watson as Susie Putnam, Chance Perdomo as Ambrose Spellman, Lucy Davis as Hilda Spellman and Miranda Otto as Zelda Spellman. The series returns for its second season on April 5.
