Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has been canceled at Netflix.
Netflix announced today that the series, based on the Archie comic of the same name and starring Mad Men's Kiernan Shipka, will come to a conclusion with its fourth season later this year. All told, the streaming series will end with 36 episodes broken into what it calls four "parts." Though Netflix doesn't release viewer numbers for its shows, it felt confident enough to renew the series in 2018, the same year it debuted. Critical consensus has also remained relatively high for the supernatural show.
Created by Riverdale showrunner and CCO of Archie Comics Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina provided a darker take than the sitcom from the '90s, staying true to the comic book that inspired it which Archie debuted in 2014. Discussing the cancellation, Aguirre-Sacasa said, “Working on Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has been an incredible honor from day one. The cast, beginning with Kiernan as everyone’s favorite teen witch, has been an absolute joy."
The showrunner continued, "I am beyond thankful to the crew, writers, editors, assistants, and everyone for pouring so much love into this dark dream of a show. I’m also grateful to our partners at Netflix, Warner Bros., Berlanti Television and Archie Comics for letting us tell the story we wanted to tell, the way we wanted to tell it. We can’t wait for everyone to see part four.”
Along with the cancellation announcement, Netflix also released new photos and a synopsis for the final season of the show. Combined, they tease the final standoff between Sabrina and her allies and the many threats (new and returning) that they'll be facing.
Over the course of Part 4’s eight episodes, The Eldritch Terrors will descend upon Greendale. The coven must fight each terrifying threat one-by-one (The Weird, The Returned, The Darkness to name a few), all leading up to...The Void, which is the End of All Things. As the witches wage war, with the help of The Fright Club, Nick begins to slowly earn his way back into Sabrina’s heart, but will it be too late?
The series has eight episodes left, which will constitute its fourth season, as Netflix chose to break each 16-episode order into two parts. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will return for its final season sometime later this year on Netflix.
