It was recently announced that Chicken Run 2 is now going ahead. However, it appears it will do so without Mel Gibson, one of the lead voice actors of the original Chicken Run.

Mel Gibson will not be reprising his role as Rocky the Rooster in Chicken Run 2. The publication notes that no further decisions have been made regarding the casting of the character. No reason was provided for why Chicken Run 2 will not be employing Gibson.

The original Chicken Run starred Julia Swahalha, Mel Gibson, Miranda Richardson, Timothy Spall, Imelda Staunton and Jane Horrocks. Released in June 2000, Chicken Run grossed $224.83 million worldwide, making it Aardman's highest-grossing movie and also the highest-grossing stop-motion movie of all time.

Production on its sequel, Chicken Run 2, is due to start in early 2021. The premise for the follow-up concerns Rocky and Ginger hatching a daughter named Molly. Shortly afterwards, they begin to hear rumors of a new and terrible threat to chickens on the mainland. The hook is that this time, the chickens are "breaking in" instead of breaking out.

Set to be directed by Sam Fell, Chicken Run 2 will be released on Netflix on an unspecified date.
