NBC's Chicago P.D. is one of the longest-running police procedurals and a vital part of the One Chicago franchise. The first spinoff of Chicago Fire, the series developed its own huge fan base following the Intelligence Unit, a unique squad of officers and detectives who are willing to do whatever it takes to solve crimes. Though it's sometimes the lowest-rated of the franchise (owing to its late time slot), it's the one most likely to have viewers talking.

The series is about to go into its tenth cycle, which is impressive for any show. However, there are serious changes on the horizon that will make Season 10 a year of transition. Before it starts, here's everything that viewers need to be aware of regarding the new Chicago P.D. season, including cast changes, plot details, how to watch and the season premiere date.

What Is Chicago PD Season 10's Story?

Chicago PD Voight Atwater Ruzek

Chicago P.D. Season 9 ended with the culmination of a multi-episode storyline involving the sometimes controversial Hank Voight and his confidential informant Anna Avalos (portrayed by Carmela Zumbado). In Season 9, Episode 22, "You and Me," the Intelligence Unit finally confronted their ongoing nemesis Javier Escano. However, it came at the cost of Anna's life as one member of Intelligence was forced to shoot her. Season 10 will have to address the fallout from that case, given Voight's closeness to Anna.

It will also have to deal with some significant changes in the Intelligence Unit, as the One Chicago drama is featuring a major cast shakeup during the season (more on that below). That will undoubtedly be something that plays out over multiple episodes as the writers plan out an exit storyline and the remaining characters deal with the loss of another team member. Intelligence is no stranger to turnover -- one only needs to look back at the exit of Antonio Dawson to see how quickly they can move on -- but how exactly will they move on?

Who Is in the Chicago P.D. Season 10 Cast?

Chicago PD Torres Halstead

One Chicago fans will have to say goodbye to an original cast member this year. Chicago P.D. Season 10 will be the last for Jesse Lee Soffer as Jay Halstead, according to Variety. Soffer had played Jay for the entire run of the show, and his departure is even bigger news given that Halstead's marriage to fellow detective Hailey Upton (played by Tracy Spiridakos) has become a massive part of the plot. Plus, Halstead's moral push and pull with Voight was a regular source of conflict.

Soffer is expected to leave "in the fall" according to the Variety report, which means Halstead won't even make it through the full season. To fill the void, Chicago P.D. had previously promoted Benjamin Levy Aguilar to series regular as rookie officer Dante Torres, another rookie who joins Intelligence (like Lisseth Chavez's short-lived Vanessa Rojas). Aguilar joins returning stars Jason Beghe, Spiridakos, Patrick John Flueger, Marina Squerciati, LaRoyce Hawkins and Amy Morton.
