Cherie Priest’s Hugo Award-nominated steampunk zombie novel Boneshaker is making its way to the big screen.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cross Creek Pictures and Exclusive Media Group are behind the adaptation, which will be penned by Nurse Jackie writer John Hilary Shepherd.
Published in 2009 as the first in a planned series of four novels, Boneshaker is set in an alternate-history version of 1880s Seattle walled in after an inventor’s “Incredible Bone-Shaking Drill Engine” strikes a a subterranean vein of toxic “blight gas” that transforms many of the city’s residents into zombies known as “rotters.” Against that setting, the inventor’s young widow searches for her teenaged son, intent on proving his father’s innocence in the disaster, and encounters airship pirates, a criminal overlord and heavily armed refugees.
