Fullmetal Alchemist offers a well-rounded story with almost no weak spots. From the plot to the animation, everything is spot on. The story follows two brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric, on their quest to regain their original bodies after losing them by committing the one and only unforgivable sin of Alchemy: human transmutation.

The two brothers made many friends along the way, and together they fought against the evil which threatened their very existence. During the numerous alchemic battles in the series, there were characters who fought against all odds in order to achieve their goals. They pushed past their limits in desperate battles and achieved impressive results.

10 Edward Was Cheered On As He Gave Everything He Had To Defeat Father

Father was able to achieve his goal of harnessing the power of the planet to gain god-like powers. Thanks to Hohenheim and his counter transmutation circle, they were able to release the millions of souls he had trapped inside of him. Desperate to save himself, Father took the fight to the surface and began stealing souls from bystanders.

Father was met with the fierce resistance of Edward and his friends. Alphonse made a desperate decision and sacrificed his soul for Edward's automail arm, which was destroyed in the fight. As the only one still able to fight, amidst the cheers of his comrades, Edward summoned every ounce of strength he had left and gave Father the beating of his life.

9 Alphonse Had To Use The Power Of The Philosopher's Stone To Fight Kimblee & Pride

Pride was trapped in total darkness to keep him from using his powers, and unfortunately, Alphonse was trapped with him. Pride pulled a fast one on Alphonse by sending coded signals to Kimblee, who arrived and blasted a hole in the wall for pride to escape.

Heinkel was caught in the blast and had a Philosopher's Stone in his possession. He was able to convince Alphonse to make use of its power even though Alphonse have vowed never to use the stone. After accepting the stone, Alphonse was able to harness its incredible power to fight against Kimblee and Pride.

8 Alex Louis Armstrong Gave An Impressive Performance In His Fight Against Sloth

Alex the Strong Arm Alchemist arrived right on time to help his sister Olivier, who was fighting Sloth. During the fight, Sloth revealed that despite his lazy attitude and boring demeanor, he was in fact the fastest homunculus of them all. Alex, however, was able to take advantage of Sloth's lack of control over his speed and inflict heavy damage on Sloth.

Even when that was not enough to keep Sloth down, Alex was able to bait Sloth into realigning his dislocated shoulder by enduring a series of punches from Sloth. Alex quickly returned the favor by displaying his boxing skills and using Sloth as a punching bag.

7 Mustang Endured The Pain Of Burning His Own Flesh In Order To Destroy Lust

Mustang and his crew, together with Alphonse and Barry The Chopper, stormed the Third Laboratory to investigate the homunculi. Mustang and Havoc were confronted by Lust, who was able to severely injure them both. She moved on to fight Alphonse and Hawkeye, but they were saved at the last minute by Mustang, who had closed his wound by burning his flesh.

Lust had ruined Mustang's ignition gloves, so he carved a transmutation circle on his hand with great determination. Mustang was furious, and he unleashed his anger on Lust, letting lose his intense flames until all that was left was ash.

6 Scar Was Able To Bring Himself To Use Alchemy

Scar was first introduced to the series as a serial killer who only targeted State Alchemists. He was doing all this to get revenge on the State Alchemists who served as human weapons during the Ishvallan Civil war. Scar believed creation was to be left to God alone, so he despised Alchemy for being a power that was able to create.

The process of performing Alchemy involves understanding, deconstructing, and reconstructing physical matter. Because of his hatred for Alchemy, Scar stopped at the deconstruction phase. However, during his battle against King Bradley, Scar got cornered and had to use the full alchemic process. He saved his life and Amestris with the help of the one thing he so despised.

5 King Bradley Fought With Strength & Stamina That Defied All Rhyme & Reason

King Bradley returned to Central City and launched a counterattack against the forces from Briggs. His skills were too overwhelming for his opponents and he fought his way to the main gate of the command center. After a harrowing battle against Ling Yao and the Briggs forces at the gate, Bradley was pushed into the river.

Despite his serious injuries, Bradley wasn't done yet. He swam back to the surface and before long, he was in a heated battle against Scar. Bradley was a homunculus unlike the others, as he was the only one who could age or die from fatal injuries. Still, Bradley was able to keep up with the best alchemists.

4 Captain Buccaneer Was Valiant To The Very End

Captain Buccaneer took the main gate of the central command center and he and his forces remained there to defend it. They were attacked by King Bradley, who they presumed to be dead. With one swift attack, Bradley took out their tank and more than a handful of their foot soldiers.

It was obvious that Buccaneer stood no chance against Bradley, but Buccaneer took him on anyway. Bradley wrecked his automail arm and dealt lethal damage to him, but Buccaneer refused to give up. When Prince Ling Yao's bodyguard Fu sacrificed himself to take Bradley down, Buccaneer took the chance to deliver the first mortal blow on Bradley.

3 Ling Yao Withstood Unbelievable Pain When He Obtained A Philosopher's Stone

Ling traveled from his country across the harsh, unforgiving desert to Amestris in order to obtain whatever the secret was to immortality. He discovered that he could gain this power if he was able to get his hands on a Philosopher's Stone. After arriving at Father's lair beneath Central City, Father decided that instead of killing Ling, he would make Ling the new vessel for his avarice.

This resulted in Ling having a stone forced into his body. Ling's body was repeatedly destroyed and reassembled as his body tried to reject it, but he endured the excruciating pain for the sake of his clan. The result was a human-based homunculus just like King Bradley.

2 Hohenheim Used Up His Regenerative Powers To Fight For His Sons

After being turned into a human Philosopher's Stone, Hohenheim wandered for hundreds of years communicating with each of the souls trapped inside him, all the while marking points for a huge transmutation circle. During the final showdown against Father, Hohenheim fought as hard as he could to hold back Father's relentless and powerful attacks.

Each time he endured a direct hit, Hohenheim's life force drained even more. Just as he was about to give up, he received encouragement from his sons and was able to hold back Father's attacks for a while longer. He later proceeded to save Izumi from a more powerful attack by putting himself in the line of fire once more.

1 Lan Fan Lost Her Arm, But She Got A New One So She Could Keep Fighting

During their mission to capture a homunculus, Lan Fan and Ling Yao were confronted by King Bradley and Gluttony. With one swift attack, Bradley severely injured Lan Fan's arm. Ling stubbornly refused to abandon her even when they were being run down by Bradley.

Desperate to shake Bradley off their tail, Lan Fan decapitated her own arm with a kunai and tied it to a dog. Even after losing her arm, she was still determined to fulfill her duty and protect Ling. She went to Rush Valley to get herself a shiny new automail arm and returned to battle soon after.
