Doctor Strange is the Sorcerer Supreme and one of Marvel's most powerful characters. Strange has been a fixture of the Marvel Universe since the 1960s, with his popularity waxing and waning over the years, but he's a part of a tried and true heroic tradition. Hubris gave him his powers and since then, he's worked to keep the universe safe and prove that he was worthy of a second chance.

10 Future Tony Stark As Sorcerer Supreme Definitely Took A Page From Strange

Tony Stark as the Sorcerer Supreme

During writer Brian Michael Bendis's run writing Iron Man, something very interesting was revealed. At some point in the future, Tony Stark was going to become the Sorcerer Supreme, eschewing magic for technology. This entire plot development basically follows Strange to a tee, as, before his accident, Strange was also a man of science who embraced magic when science failed him.

Beyond that, the two have similar facial hair and are both heroes who are willing to go to extremes to make sure the Earth is safe. It's a shame that fans will never get more than glimpses of Sorcerer Supreme Tony, because seeing the full story of how he became that way would be amazing.

9 Clea Has Taken Stephen's Place As Sorcerer Supreme

Marvel's Clea using magic

Clea has always had a lot of Strange's DNA inside her. The sorceress from another dimension started a long-term relationship with Doctor Strange, with the two of them learning a lot from each other. Clea studied the mystic arts under Strange, becoming more and more powerful. She also devoted herself to protecting reality from the worst foes out there.

Doctor Strange has recently died, with Clea taking his place as the Sorcerer Supreme. It's a role she's perfectly suited for, as well as being one she earned. Much like her on and off paramour, Clea studied under the Sorcerer Supreme for years and took their place when they died.

8 John Constantine Is Punk Rock Doctor Strange

John Constantine, Hellblazer With Angel Wings Behind Him

Magic users in fiction have been around forever, but John Constantine broke the mold. A magical protector filtered through the lens of punk rock and Thatcher-era Great Britain, Constantine has stood the test of time. His unique method of protecting the world from magical threats is very different from Strange's, but they are definitely related.

Doctor Strange and John Constantine both stand between the mundane world and the vicissitudes of the worlds beyond. They each use their powers to battle the most dangerous threats, and both men have shown a pragmatic streak, even though they are different in just about every other way.

7 Doctor Doom And Doctor Strange Have More Than Magic In Common

Doctor Doom reading The Darkhold in Marvel Comics

Doctor Doom isn't the most villainous bad guy out there, but he is known for his attempts to take over the world. Doom and Doctor Strange have been competitors for a long time, as Doom is nearly Strange's equal when it comes to magic. However, the two characters have a lot more in common than just the mystic arts.

They are both are arrogant men disfigured by their hubris. Both turned to magic to solve a problem in their life. Both of them have been part of secret organizations that set out to influence the world. Strange and Doom are more similar than most people imagine, but once it's seen, it is impossible to miss.

6 Brother Voodoo Has Been Sorcerer Supreme Before

Brother Voodoo commands magic in Marvel Comics

The Marvel Universe is full of magic users of all power levels. One who is usually considered somewhere in the middle is Brother Voodoo. There have been two different Brothers Voodoo over the years - Daniel and Jericho Drumm - with the latter becoming Sorcerer Supreme for a time. It's a more venerable legacy than most imagine and serves a similar place in the Voodoo community to Strange's role in the magical one.

Brother Voodoo has always been the pinnacle of the Voodoo community, so replacing Strange as Sorcerer Supreme was the perfect role. Jericho did a great job in the role, as he was already basically Supreme Houngan, as it were.

5 Wiccan Is His Generation's Doctor Strange

Wiccan blasting energy through his hands

Wiccan is an interesting character because at first he was meant to play into Thor's iconography, as his codename was originally Asgardian, but that changed when his parentage was revealed. While many think of him as the Scarlet Witch of his generation, he's more in line with Doctor Strange.

Wiccan is the most powerful magic user among his cohorts, something his mother never really reached since her greatest power is inborn. Wiccan could easily be a future Sorcerer Supreme, something that would prove that he's definitely more Strange than Scarlet.

4 Dr. Druid Is Actually The Blueprint For Doctor Strange

Doctor Druid from Marvel Comics

Marvel's C-listers often get to join the Avengers, but one of the weirdest is Dr. Druid. The character may seem like a rip-off of Doctor Strange, but he's actually proto-Doctor Strange. Originally called Dr. Droom, Dr. Druid was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby before the inception of the Fantastic Four.

Doctor Strange would come later, and basically be a more superheroic version of Droom. Droom would return in the 1980s as Dr. Druid. He'd join the Avengers, go bad, and disappear for years, although he made a comeback not too long ago in Strange's comic.

3 Zatanna Has Long Served A Similar Role To Strange

DC comics' Zatanna, in costume, complete with hat and wand.

Zatanna has had a long and winding superheroic career, one that has seen her face down the greatest threats in the multiverse, magical or otherwise. Studying magic under her father, Zatanna has mastered multiple disciplines and become the premiere magic user for the Justice League, spending years with various incarnations of the team.

Zatanna and Doctor Strange have always played nearly the same role in their respective superhero universes. Both of them have served as the premiere magical advisors to superheroes and trained under the most powerful magicians they could.

2 Reed Richards And Doctor Strange Are The Same Character In A Lot Of Ways

Reed Richards poses heroically in Marvel Comics

The Fantastic Four is known for its superhero sci-fi exploits, all spurred on by their leader Reed Richards. Reed and Doctor Strange are friends, yet most people wouldn't expect them to have much in common. However, they are almost the same person in a lot of ways. Both of them are hubristic men of science, each harmed by their own arrogance.

Reed is known for constantly pushing the bounds of science and always learning. Strange is known for constantly pushing the bounds of magic and always learning. Both of them joined the Illuminati for the same reasons. The only difference is one likes science and one likes magic.

1 Doctor Strange Was Almost Certainly Inspired By Doctor Fate

DC Comics Doctor Fate

Saying Doctor Fate is like Doctor Strange isn't exactly correct. Fate debuted decades before Strange did, with archeologist Kent Nelson finding the Helmet of Fate and joining the Justice Society to fight evil. Fate became the greatest magic user on Earth and a mainstay of the DC Universe pre and post-Crisis.

As the years went by, the two characters have grown closer, with Doctor Fate taking some ideas from Doctor Strange. The current Fate, Khalid Nassour was a medical student who began studying under Kent Nelson to gain magical knowledge, much like Strange did with the Ancient One.
