Scottsdale, AZ - Janaury 16, 2002 - On September 11, 2001 the entireworld was changed forever. On September 15th, 2001 in Mesa, Arizona, aman with a gun shot two gas stations, killing the owner of one of thestores. The man was the first person killed in the epidemic of hatecrimes that struck since September 11th.
This man, Balbir Singh Sodhi, was a Sikh, a member of a religion startedover 500 years ago in India with over 20 million followers. Male Sikhshave facial hair and wear turbans as part of there faith, and Balbir, agentle man who was loved by his community, was targeted because of how helooked. The gunman believed he was an enemy because of the way he looked.
In response to this, and all the many families that have been affectedsince 9/11, Chaos! Comics, located in Scottsdale, Arizona, is holding abenefit signing for a 9/11 comic book. It is a two volume comic tributebook brought together by the largest coalition of comic book publishers.The comic book tribute is called, September 11: Artists Respond. One ofthe pages in the Artists Respond is a tribute page to Balbir Singh Sodhi.
The event is being held on Wednesday, January 23, 2002, at All AboutBooks and Comics in Phoenix, Arizona from 3PM-5PM. As a co-producer ofthe comic book tribute, Chaos! Comics and publisher Brian Pulido will bethere to promote the book, and to present an original piece of artwork ofBalbir to his family as a tribute to them.
Chaos! Comics will donate portions of the proceeds to the Balbir FamilyMemorial Fund as well as deserving charities of vitcims of affected bythe 9/11 tragedy.
