Despite losing its director in late 2016, Fox's X-Men spinoff "Gambit" remains a priority for the studio, and with its originally announced star still attached to the project.RELATED: Did Fox Just Accidentally Announce A New X-Men Movie?Producer Lauren Shuler Donner informed the press at a recent event that despite the exit of director Doug Liman in August 2016 (nearly a year after he had joined the production), Channing Tatum is still in place to star in the film, as reported by Buzzfeed's Jarett Wieselman on Twitter.

Liman's departure from the film was described at the time as a "mutual parting of ways," with neither the director not studio bearing any ill will towards the other. Liman left in order to helm Warner Bros/DC Films' live-action "Justice League Dark" movie.

Presumably, Josh Zetumer remains on as the film's screenwriter, with Simon Kinberg, and Tatum's frequent collaborator Reid Carolin producing the X-Men spinoff. “We have a great script on that and hope to shoot that movie at the beginning of spring of next year,” Executive Producer Simon Kinberg said in July 2016.

Originally scheduled for release in October 2016, "Gambit" remains, at this point, without an announced debut date.
