Channing Tatum may not play "Gambit" after all. An unconfirmed report Tuesday evening from The Wrap stated that the actor is "planning to exit" the "X-Men" spinoff film, according to an unnamed source. 20th Century Fox and Tatum's representatives did not comment on The Wrap's report as of publication; CBR News has reached out to both for comment.
Another source in the article claims that Tatum is still in "active discussions" with Fox, though "something is up." Beyond starring in "Gambit," Tatum and producing partner Reid Carolin were on board as producers of the film, along with X-franchise veterans Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg. Director Rupert Wyatt appears to still be on board, according to The Wrap's report.
Tatum has made his enthusiasm for the character -- a fan-favorite X-Men team member introduced in 1990 and created by Chris Claremont and Jim Lee -- clear in multiple public appearances, even before officially coming on board the project.
"Gambit" has a release date of Oct. 7, 2016. Tatum appeared at Comic-Con International in San Diego earlier this month to promote the film, as part of 20th Century Fox's Hall H presentation.
