Amazon Studios lands the upcoming action movie Red Shirt, directed by Deadpool 2 director David Leitch and starring Channing Tatum.

According to a Deadline report, Amazon won a competitive bidding war for the rights to the project, beating Paramount, Universal and Netflix after the package became available right before Thanksgiving. Tatum's production company, Free Association, will work on the movie alongside Leitch's 87 North Production banner and Simon Kinberg's Genre Films. Red Shirt is based on an initial pitch by Kinberg, who previously wrote Sherlock Holmes and Mr. and Mrs. Smith while also producing multiple movies in the X-Men film franchise.

There are no definitive details as yet about the movie's plot or synopsis, though it's described as an international spy thriller with a spin on the James Bond franchise. Considering the purchase of Red Shirt by Amazon was reportedly one of the biggest of 2022 so far according to industry insiders, the movie could have big franchise potential if successful.

Channing Tatum Had a Great 2022

Tatum is known for roles such as playing Jason Lyle in the 2005 film Coach Carter, Tyler Gage in Step Up, Conrad S. Hauser in the G.I. Joe movie franchise and Caine Wise in Jupiter Ascending. His pair of 2022 films, Dog and The Lost City, became big box office successes. Dog, which Tatum directed and produced, is a comedy-drama road film in which he stars as an Army Ranger escorting a military dog of his deceased friend to his funeral. Also starring Jane Adams, Ethan Suplee and former wrestler Kevin Nash, Dog generated $84 million at the box office on a $15 million budget. Meanwhile, The Lost City, which saw Tatum star alongside Sandra Bullock, Daniel Radcliffe and Brad Pitt, is an action-adventure comedy effort that has grossed $190.8 million globally since its March 2022 release.

Tatum will star alongside Scarlett Johansson in the upcoming film Project Artemis, replacing notable Avengers film franchise actor Chris Evans, who pulled out of filming due to scheduling conflicts. Additionally, the Alabama native will play Mike Lane in Steven Soderbergh's movie Magic Mike's Last Dance.

Alongside Deadpool 2, Leitch is known for directing the 2017 film Atomic Thriller, starring Charlize Theron. He also helmed the 2019 Fast & Furious spinoff, Hobbs & Shaw, starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham. His latest film, Bullet Train, featured the aforementioned Pitt and has notched $240 million since its release this past August. Furthermore, he's a producer for the Christmas fantasy dark comedy Violent Night, which premieres in U.S. theaters on Dec. 2.
