WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Champions #9, available now from Marvel.

The Champions -- along with most young Marvel heroes -- have been dealing with an especially difficult time lately. Events like King in Black and Outlawed have pushed them to their limits and tested the bonds that define them. But for all that strife, there can still be moments of triumph.

The young heroes of the Marvel Universe gain a major victory in Champions #9 by Danny Lore, Luciano Vecchio, Federico Blee, and VC's Clayton Cowles by helping ensure the outlawing of the law targeting young heroes. But it's also left one of their newest foes desperate -- and unleashing a potentially deadly threat.

Champions Kamala's Law Outlawed 2

Kamala's Law has been one of the major status quo changes in the recent Marvel Universe. After a public battle between the Champions and a dragon incurred serious damage to the Champions and Coles Academic High School, public perception on young heroes took a serious turn for the worst. Roxxon supported the implementation of a new series of laws specifically targeting young vigilantes and putting them into brutal reeducation camps. The law garnered public support as Kamala's Law -- named for Kamala Khan, a Coles Academic student who was left in a coma from the chaos (and in reality is the leader of the Champions, Ms. Marvel). Upon awakening, Kamala has tried her best to discredit and oppose the law, alongside (most) of her fellow Champions.

Their mission has even forced members of the team to go undercover as interns for Roxxon, gaining further access to the villainous company and allowing them to breach their digital defenses. Although Spider-Man has adjusted easily while Nova continually draw negative criticism from the Roxxon staff, it was Kamala and her marketing potential that draws the most attention of Dr. Miriam Blakemoore -- the primary mind behind both Roxxon's attempts to smooth over its public image and the lead voice behind the Chaperone Program -- a Sentinel-like class of robots designed to take down young heroes if they break Kamala's Law. Desperate to catch Blakemoore's attention and draw it away from Viv's work in the Roxxon servers, Kamala reluctantly agrees to publicly endorse Roxxon's social media app, Roxx On!.

Champions Kamala's Law Outlawed 3

Luckily, the Champions are able to devise a plan to out-fox Blakemoore's true intent: staging an attack on Kamala and "proving" to the world that C.R.A.D.L.E. (the organization dedicated to capturing the young heroes) is a worthwhile endeavor. While the Champions sneak through the crowd and quietly defeat each of Blakemoore's agents in turn, Kamala goes off-script and tells the public her real views on Roxxon. The soldiers of C.R.A.D.L.E. try to stop her, but are kept at bay by a wave of people, standing up in support of Kamala. The Champions even debut Champscharge, a completely free video/audio app that will remain ad-free and sponsored by the team. It's a major win, with the Champions fully reuniting and celebrating as this becomes the final key to the government overturning Kamala's law.

But there's still the complication of the Chaperones. The robots are a dangerous group of automated weapons, with more than enough power to potentially bring down swaths of heroes. Furious with the turn of events and betrayed that Blakemoore is simply retreating to lick Roxxon's public wounds, André Sims activates the Chaperones and decided to attack the Champions -- with the intent to showcase how destructive superhero fights can be, and convince the world of the need for the robots. It's a dangerous mission that could quickly backfire on him and give the Champions a chance to showcase their heroism. But it's also a potentially deadly attack that may push the (luckily reassembled) Champions into a massive firefight.
