Though the late Chadwick Boseman's animated performance in Marvel's upcoming What If…?  series will be the last time fans hear him play T'Challa/Black Panther again, that appearance might actually span more than one occasion.

In an interview with Emmy magazine, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige revealed that Boseman "came in about four times and recorded numerous episodes" for What If…? On being able to work with the actor like this before his shocking death, Feige felt that "in hindsight, it's very moving."

All that Feige would disclose on what the episodes were about was how "These are all sorts of stories we couldn’t explore through live-action." One confirmed narrative featured heavily throughout What If…?'s trailer reveal saw young T'Challa, rather than Peter Quill, being picked up by Yondu (Michael Rooker) and the Ravagers, who learn that he's "exploring the world" and offer to instead show him the entire universe. Other shots reveal an adult T'Challa wearing the Star-Lord mask and a purple Wakanda-inspired jacket, as well as asking what looks like Howard the Duck to "give me the tour."

What If…?, as its title implies, will explore various elseworld timelines of the Marvel Cinematic Universe had certain events played out differently than in the movies. Each episode will be narrated by the Watcher (Jeffrey Wright) a cosmic alien tasked with watching over these various realities and observing the universe, as well as humanity, from afar. Other stories featured in the trailer included Doctor Strange fighting a corrupt doppelgänger and Peggy Carter receiving the super-soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers, with the majority of the MCU's cast providing their voices to reprise their film roles.

Boseman passed away on August 28 from Stage IV colon cancer, a diagnosis he chose to withhold from the public even as he continued acting. Marvel Studios has confirmed that it will not re-cast Boseman for the upcoming sequel Black Panther II, though no further details on plot alterations to accommodate his death – such as whether Shuri (Letita Wright) will take over as Black Panther – have been announced.

Created by A.C. Bradley and directed by Bryan Andrews, What If...? stars Jeffrey Wright, Samuel L. Jackson, Hayley Atwell, Chadwick Boseman, Tom Hiddleston, Michael Rooker, Chris Hemsworth, Dominic Cooper and Jeremy Renner, among others. The first season will consist of 10 episodes and be available on Disney+ in summer 2021.
