CDC Uses The Walking Dead to Teach Emergency Preparedness

In May 2011, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention went viral with a blog post about surviving the zombie apocalypse. Since then, the government agency has continued to use the undead to help promote disaster preparedness in the event of a zombie apocalypse — or hurricane or tornado. Now, the CDC’s zombie fever has returned in a post about the teachable moments from The Walking Dead, made last week in anticipation of the show’s midseason premiere. The entry comes complete with a recap of the events so far as well as cautionary clips from the show accompanying advice from the agency.

The three tips include “Make a pit stop, fill up before it’s too late,” “First aid kit, never leave home without it” and “Clean water is zombie-free water.” The descriptions also feature references to the TV survivors’ lack of preparedness. The CDC promises to look out for more “teachable moments,” but no new information has been revealed.

For more teachable moments, check out the CDC Public Health Matters Blog and tune in to AMC Sunday at 9 p.m. ET/PT for a new episode of The Walking Dead.
