CCI | Top Cow’s The Darkness Springs To Life At Mandeville

On the eve of Comic-Con International, there’s good news and bad news for The Darkness, the supernatural horror series from Top Cow Productions. The bad news is that 2K Games has pushed back the release of The Darkness II video game from October to Feb. 12, 2012. However, the good news, according to 24 Frames, is that long-discussed film adaptation has sprung back to life.

The Los Angeles Times blog reports that Mandeville Films, the production company behind The Fighter and Surrogates, has signed a deal with Top Cow to develop the film. The two are already working together on adaptations of the publisher’s Alibi and Crosshair titles.

Created by Marc Silvestri, David Wohl and Garth Ennis, The Darkness centers on Jackie Estacado, a mob hitman who becomes the living vessel of an ancient power that grants him access to another dimension and control over the demons who live there. Estacado must learn to master this dark force while grappling with his enemies within the crime family. The character debuted in 1996’s Witchblade #10 before going on to star in his own long-running title.

Dimension Films originally acquired the film rights to The Darkness in 2004 for a six-figure sum, but the 2008 target date came and went with little movement on the project. Scott Stuber Productions, the company behind The Kingdom, picked up the reins in 2009, but again nothing. However, now, 24 Frames reports, Top Cow and Mandeville hope the time is right for The Darkness to come to theaters.
