CCI: <i>Robot Chicken</i> Crew Previews <i>DC Comics Special</i>

The sixth season of Adult Swim’s Robot Chicken has the stripping “Go-Go Inspector Gadget” you’ve been waiting for. It also has an Avengers musical, and a whole city of LEGO gags.

Teasing that and more, co-creators Seth Green and Matthew Senreich, actor/writer Breckin Meyer, writers Matthew Beans and Tom Root, and DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns hosted a panel at Comic-Con International to reveal more details about the highly anticipated DC Comics Special.

At six years old, Robot Chicken still has a lot left to parody, and some impressive voice talent to help: This season’s guest stars include Jon Stewart, Whoopi Goldberg, Sam Elliot, Jason Sudeikis, Aaron Paul, Daniel Radcliffe, Tom Hiddleston, Stanley Tucci, Steven Tyler and Elizabeth Banks.

The producers introduced the panel with a trailer featuring a vengeful robot chicken finally giving the mad scientist his comeuppance in the credit sequence, followed by glimpses of Jesus on a talk show with Mary, a woman knitting a sweater for her human centipede granddaughter, an older man offering Woody Woodpecker something to peck on, and the aforementioned Inspector Gadget wearing just a g-string and shaking it a little too much.

They also screened a preview of the DC special, which included plenty of Justice League and Super Friends sketches, as well as a land-befuddled Aquaman and The Joker spraying something into Batman’s face. (“Dude, is that pee?”)

Johns joined the Robot Chicken team to work on the half-hour special, explaining, “I wanted to see them do it, and make as much fun of DC comics as we possibly could.”

The writer also kept the DC Universe in line for the team, sorting through the characters and their mythologies for the special. The Robot Chicken crew was in a state of constant surprise at the oddities found within the DCU, and repeatedly stormed into Johns’ office to ask questions. Unlike most Robot Chicken episodes, the DC special has a narrative string that pulls the half-hour together, making the research essential.

Voice talent for the special includes Green (Batman), Meyer (Superman), Neil Patrick Harris (Two-Face), Megan Fox (Lois Lane) and Nathan Fillion (Green Lantern).

Robot Chicken doesn’t have any Marvel specials planned, but Season 6 offers plenty of Marvel jokes. “We hate Marvel Comics,” Beans joked. “I wanna go on record.”

“We literally could not stop writing Avengers sketches,” Green said.

“Get ready for an Avengers musical,” Root joked. “If you love [Spider-Man:] Turn Off the Dark …”

Green and company also discussed the secret origin of the show. “Robot Chicken was the last title that we wanted for the show,” Green said. “Robot Chicken was an item on the menu of the Chinese food that we ordered from. Once the show got named Robot Chicken, the opening title sequence kind of wrote itself.”

Beans explained the figures used on the show for the stop-motion animation. “Our first season some of it was from our collection and then we learned that there was this thing called the Internet where you can buy stuff,” he said. Later on, the show hired a wrangler tasked with hunting down useful toys. At this point in the run they have the ability to create their own toys for the show.

Green and Meyer paused in the middle of the question-and-answer session to have a little fun with an American Sign Language interpreter, who was both horrified and embarrassed to see that she was drawing attention. Meyer spoke to her in fluid sign while Green posed the question of the night: “Wait, I wanna know what the sign language is for ‘poopy, poopy on my pants part.'”

Robot Chicken Season 6 and the Robot Chicken DC Comics Special will air in September on Adult Swim.
