The Voltron revival continues apace with the announcement this evening that Relativity Media and Atlas Entertainment are developing a live-action adaptation of the classic 1980s anime.
Based on material licensed from the anime Beast King GoLion and Kikou Kantai Dairugger XV, the original Voltron: Defender of the Universe followed an elite battle force comprised of five young warriors who defend humanity by piloting a battalion of high-tech Robot Lions with the ability to join together to create the mega-weapon known as Voltron.
The property has maintained a cult following over the past 25 years, returning to television last month with the animated Voltron Force on Nicktoons.
The live-action adaptation is being written by Thomas Dean Donnelly (Conan the Barbarian) and Joshua Oppenheimer (Sahara). It will be produced by Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven (The Dark Knight) and Richard Suckle (The International), along with Kickstart Entertainment’s Jason Netter (Wanted). Ted Koplar of World Events Productions, which owns the Voltron rights, will executive produce.
