Veteran actor and genre icon Bruce Campbell visited the CBR Speakeasy in North Hollywood, CA to discuss his newest gig, playing the host of ConTV’s “Last Fan Standing,” a new game show thats puts comic book, sci-fi, fantasy and horror fans to the ultimate test. While Campbell is still using his acting chops for projects including Starz’s “Ash Vs. Evil Dead,” he explains to CBR’s Jonah Weiland why he decided to add host to his resume and what sets “Last Fan Standing” apart from “Jeopardy” and other long running game shows.
Given the fact that Campbell has been a film and TV mainstay since the early 1980s, some might be quick to call hosting a game show a step back, but the actor sees it differently. “I’m entering the crooked politician phase of my career,” Campbell said of why now was the time to try his hand at becoming a host. “I could play gym teachers, guys next door, crabby uncles, grandfathers. I could play presidents, generals… I could also play a game show host.”
Unlike stuffier game shows, “Last Fan Standing” runs on passion. “People who spend their entire lives watching other people in the spotlight, we’re going, ‘No, c’mere. You get in there,'” Campbell said of what makes the contestants on “Last Fan Standing” different from other shows. “They walk right off the showroom floor — I mean, in costume — and they’re the best contestants of all.
“They disproportionately know more about certain things than the average guy,” Campbell said of the fans he encounters on the show and at conventions. “Most people don’t get obsessed about these shows, but people at conventions — if you go to a comic con you’re already a freak about something. There’s something you’re really jonesing for and you gotta see, whether it’s Shatner or Stan Lee or one of these guys. Norman Reedus, for God’s sake.
Campbell stressed that while the show will separate the geeks from not-so-geeky, the subject matter won’t be so specific that those watching at home will feel lost, which is precisely why he doesn’t watch “Jeopardy.” “It’s been on for seventy years but it sucks because it drives me crazy,” Campbell said of the long running quiz show. “I don’t want to feel stupid. We are gonna have, the deeper the show gets into the second or third round, yeah, it’s gonna get a little hotter. It’s gonna get a little more specific.”
