Acclaimed as a "fine combination of psychological and supernatural horror" and "creepy as hell," Caveat was filmed in McCarthy's home city of Cork, Ireland and marks his first full-length outing following a string of successful short horror films. The film has been well-received for its slow-building tension and contrasting creepy interiors, evocative of Evil Dead, with a beautiful natural landscape.

Shudder has released an official synopsis for the film, which can be read below.

Lone drifter Isaac (Jonathan French, The Secret Box) accepts a job to look after his landlord’s niece, Olga (Leila Sykes, Lancaster Skies), for a few days in an isolated house on a remote island. It seems like easy money, but there’s a catch: he must wear a leather harness and chain that restricts his movements to certain rooms.

Once Olga’s uncle, Barrett (Ben Caplan, Call the Midwife) leaves the two of them alone, a game of cat and mouse ensues as Olga displays increasingly erratic behavior as a trapped Isaac makes a series of horrific discoveries in the house. Playing out like a thoughtful, long-lost 80s chiller, the film leads the audience on a path of twist and turns to an unforgettable resolution.

McCarthy's previous films (He Dies At End, Hatch, Hungry Hickory, Never Ever Open It, How Olin Lost His Eye) have screened during film festivals including Film4 Frightfest in London, Screamfest in LA, the New York City Horror Film Festival and the San Sebastian Horror & Fantasy Film Festival. McCarthy also received the Cutting Edge Award for Best Emerging Horror Director and was a two-time winner of the Melies d’Argent Award for Best European Short Film.

Caveat was written, directed and edited by McCarthy and stars Jonathan French, Ben Caplan, Leila Sykes and Conor Dwane, with cinematography by Kieran Fitzgerald and music composed by Richard G. Mitchell. The film was produced by Justin Hyne of HyneSight  Films. It arrives on Shudder in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand on June 3, 2021.
