Halle Berry admitted in a new interview that she knew 2004's Catwoman was problematic while she was working on the film.

"The story didn't feel quite right," Berry recently told Variety. "I remember having that argument: 'Why can't Catwoman save the world like Batman and Superman do? Why is she just saving women from a face cream that cracks their face off?'" She added, "But I was just the actor for hire. I wasn't the director. I had very little say over that."

In the 2004 film, Berry's Catwoman faced off with the villainous head of a cosmetics brand portrayed by Sharon Stone. The film proved to be a box-office flop and swept the Golden Raspberry Awards — aka the Razzies — that year. The role of Selina Kyle/Catwoman has also been portrayed in film by Michelle Pfeiffer (1992's Batman Returns) and Anne Hathaway (2012's The Dark Knight Rises).

Zoë Kravitz will be the next actor to step into the role in 2021's The Batman. When Kravitz was cast back in 2019, Berry gave her a shout out on Twitter, saying, "Keep shining Queen & welcome to the family!" Directed by Matt Reeves, The Batman also stars Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Paul Dano as Edward Nashton/The Riddler, Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin and Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon. It is set for release on Oct. 21, 2021.
