In the Batman mythos, few would put Catwoman in their top five favorite characters, some not even putting her in their top tens. There's no denying that there are more charismatic villains, such as Joker or Harley Quinn (when she is one). He's got a solid supporting cast with Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon as well, leaving her somewhere in the middle ground.

All of that said, she's one of the more overlooked characters. When done right (admittedly not often) she's a great moral foil to Bruce, providing him a person that's been on the other side of the law, but can also relate to him as both a hero and man. That's part of why they nearly married recently. For those who aren't as familiar with her, here are ten facts you should know about Gotham's resident feline.

10 She Was Once A Mob Boss

During Batman Eternal, Selina Kyle found out that she was the daughter of Rex Calabrese, head of the Calabrese family. This was further explored within the "Keeper of the Castle" trade of Catwoman's new 52 run. It took the character in a completely different direction, giving us a new view of Selina. It let us see what it would be like if Catwoman were ever in charge of others rather than being a loner. Naturally, her run as don didn't last long before she put the catsuit back on, returning to the status quo.

This run was hands down the best of her new 52 work, even if to some it went against what made her Catwoman (much like Grayson). Part of this is because Genevieve Valentine is a pretty good writer and because Ann Nocenti is one of the worst. Valentine helped make Catwoman readable again.

9 She's Had Her Mind Wiped Before

Halle Berry as Catwoman

Unfortunately, it wasn't to rid herself of bad live-action movie from her memory. If it was, we'd be right in line with her, that monstrosity makes Green Lantern look oscar worthy. Potshots aside, Zatanna not only wiped her memory but altered it to make Catwoman believe she was more heroic than she truly was. It was the cause of her becoming the savior of the east end and Batman and her falling into a committed relationship.

Worst of all, the Justice League was in on it. It's such a convoluted and confusing storyline that only comics could think up. Unsurprisingly, when she finds out, she freaks out and throws Zatanna out a window.

8 She Used To Dress Up Like An Actual Cat

This is how Catwoman was first introduced (Known as The Cat then) to the world, yes, it's a woman wearing an orange cape and a cat head. Even for the 1940s, that is a ridiculous looking outfit. Even worse than that outfit, back then, it was heavily hinted that she outright killed people. While deaths have been on her hands since then too, she's always been a thief first, only killing when people deserve it.

Back then? No, it was just whoever got in her way. Thankfully that got toned down as the years went along, helping shape her into the character she is today.

7 Thank Julie Newmar For Her Iconic Look

Long before Harley Quinn was forcing her way into comics from a television show, there was Julie Newmar's take on Catwoman. The 1960s Batman is many things, campy fun, super upbeat, and most of all, one of the trailblazers of the superhero genre. While most would point to Adam West for that, rightfully so.

It was actually Julie Newmar who had the most impact on comics themselves, forcing them to adhere to her well-liked look from the show. If not for her, there's no telling if Catwoman would ever be suiting up in her iconic catsuit and ears.

6 She Has Her Heart Cut Out

This whole storyline is comics to a tee. In the Heart of Hush, he has an elaborate plan where he plans to kill Bruce Wayne and takes his place by looking exactly like him. It's a storyline most of us can get behind, especially since Hush is known for having extremely elaborate plots. The whole arc isn't even that bad either, worth a read.

The issue is that Selina Kyle finds out his plan, so he takes it a step beyond just taking her hostage, he cuts out her heart and stores it away. It's the type of event that just makes you raise your eyebrow at how over the top and ridiculous it is. Naturally, Bruce saves her, and all is well, but it's rather crazy that this even a plot point for a book.

5 Selina Kyle Hasn't Been The Only Catwoman

Obviously, she's the most recognizable and for good reason, her replacements never lasted very long, unlike the various Batgirls. They were only there whenever Selina felt the need to put down the ears, which is only two occasions. Second of which was during the time she was the head of the Calabrese family. Here a yakuza rival, Eiko Hasigawa, took up the mantle briefly. This eventually led to the two having more intimate relations later on.

The first time was during One Year Later when Catwoman was taking care of her daughter, Holly. This led to long time friend and confidant, Holly Robinson taking up the whip, and patrolling the rooftops.

4 She Killed Black Mask

This all spawned from one of the best Catwoman arcs ever, one where Black Mask took being a villain to a whole new level. Many villains target those close to a hero to get to them, just as real-life crime bosses do now. The best way to get someone to do what you want is by threatening a person close to them.

Well, Black Mask went above beyond that, kidnapping Catwoman's sister and torturing her mercilessly. This isn't run of the mill torture either, she was forced to eat her husband's eyeball. It's a grotesque scene that rightfully breaks Catwoman, leading to the awesome moment above.

3 Her Sister Was Driven Insane

Maggie Kyle was driven to the point of insanity, Black Mask being more successful than even The Joker in this regard. His torture methods were so effective that he turned what had once been a devout nun into a crazed killer known as Sister Zero, a woman hell-bent on getting revenge on Catwoman.

Now she sees herself as a savior, guardian angel from god himself. While she doesn't show up often, she did have a big role in the Gotham City Sirens series, where the three girls had to team up to take her down, proving what a cohesive unit the three villainesses are.

2 She Formed A Team With Poison Ivy And Harley

This should have been the team that made it to the feature screen rather than shoehorning Harley into the Birds of Prey, especially with Selina's connection to Black Mask. It would have led to a far better story and given Black Mask more character than he got on the film. We will have to settle for them having their one-time series together, however.

Said series is one of the best in terms of girl power, mixing in ass-kicking and humor almost seamlessly. All three get their own separate arcs, making sure no one takes a back seat here. Even The Riddler gets in on the action, making this a fun series to read for those that haven't.

1 She Was Banned By The Comic Code Authority

Back in 1954, the Comic Code Authority was created, with the intent on removing nudity, crime, horror, and all things terror from comic books. This led to much of the camp from that era, no one able to ever push the boundaries. You couldn't even come within ten feet of it, case in point being Catwoman. They had to outright write her out of comics because she glamourized crime, which was a big no.

It's a stark reminder that even back then, people in charge worried about the most meaningless things. Why focus on real issues when we can blame comics! Back then they were very much the video games of that era.
