According to an anonymous VFX artist, the rumored "butthole cut" of the already notorious 2019 film adaptation of the musical Cats is, in fact, real.

The source told Daily Beast the production did see CGI buttholes on the actors at some point. However, it was not the result of an artistic vision demanding total realism but rather the film's chaotic production. "There was nobody that said, 'We want buttonholes,'" the source explained. "It was one of those things that just happened and slipped through."

The "butthole cut" has been a celebrated Internet urban legend since screenwriter Jack Waz spoke out on Twitter, stating a friend who worked with the special effects team for Cats claimed his entire job was removing CGI buttholes. His tweet was amplified by actor Seth Rogen and director Rian Johnson. Another unnamed source also said an earlier cut of the film had CGI fur that occasionally resembled genitalia and buttholes.

The source went on to explain that the buttholes manifested about halfway through the film's production and came as a shock to the crew. "When we were looking at the playbacks, we were like, 'What the hell? You guys see that?!'" they recalled. "We paused it. We went to call our supervisor, and we’re like, 'There’s a fucking asshole in there! There’s buttholes!' It wasn’t prominent but you saw it… And you [were] just like, 'What the hell is that?... There’s a fucking butthole in there.' It wasn’t in your face—but at the same time, too, if you’re looking, you’ll see it."

Directed by Tom Hooper, Cats stars James Corden, Judi Dench, Jason Derulo, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Ian McKellen, Taylor Swift, Rebel Wilson and Francesca Hayward.
