There has been speculation that the musical-turned-film Cats had a butthole cut in which the movie's CGI cats had fully visible buttholes, just like real-life cats. Now such a cut exists, if only in the form of a satirical YouTube video.

XVP Comedy released a parody edit of the Cats trailer on YouTube that "fixes" the original cut of the film by pasting buttholes on the cats' bodies (and elsewhere), titled "Cats: The Butthole Cut ."

"A rumor has spread online that the characters in the film Cats originally had buttholes that were digitally removed," text on the video reads. "The rumor is true."

"I kept adding buttholes," a mock quote from director Tom Hooper reads. "It just felt right."

The video also includes some real quotes and hashtags referencing the rumor of the butthole cut or demanding its release. These include "Release the butthole cut of Cats!!!" which was taken from a tweet by actor Seth Rogen, and "#releasethebuttholecut," another tweet from director Rian Johnson.

This still leaves open the matter of whether or not the butthole cut was ever more than an internet joke. The story started with screenwriter Jack Waz, who claimed on Twitter that a friend of his working in special effects was assigned the job of removing CGI buttholes from all the characters. An anonymous Cats crew member did later admit that an earlier cut of the film had CGI in which the fur of some of the cats resembled buttholes and genitalia but that nothing was intentional.
