With the 31st year anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre taking place on June 4th, Birds of Prey director, Cathy Yan, has shared some thoughts on the tragedy.

On Twitter, Yan shared a powerful image from the Tiananmen Square Massacre and commented that the event had a large effect on China as well as herself. "Now China boldly suppresses dissent in HK as the world watches," Yan said. "These violent acts of oppression boost authoritarian control and dismantles civic society long after the blood dries."

Taking place on June 4, 1989, the Tiananmen Square Massacre began with pro-democracy protests from Chinese citizens, which resulted in China sending in its military to deal with protestors. Troops would eventually open fire on the protestors, resulting in a multitude of deaths that some estimated to be in the thousands.

Cathy Yan was born in China and her first feature-length film, Dead Pigs, was set and filmed in Shanghai. Yan would go on to direct the DC Extended Universe film, Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), which released in early 2020.

Directed by Cathy Yan and written by Christina Hudson, Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of one Harley Quinn) stars Margot Robbie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Rosie Perez, Chris Messina, Ella Jay Basco and Ewan McGregor. The film is now available on video-on-demand.
