Universal Pictures has released the first official trailer for Tom Hooper’s upcoming film adaptation of Cats. It is… a challenging watch.
The trailer uses special effects to make the award-winning Broadway musical’s titular subjects come to life on the big screen, blending the likenesses of actors both new and revered with various feline traits for a one-way trip down the Uncanny Valley that will leave you titillated and intrigued -- or the complete opposite of that.
For the uninitiated, the premise of the film is nearly as mindboggling as the visuals. The film focuses on a group of cats named the Jellicles. Every year, this tribe is forced to make the Jellicle Choice, deciding which cat will enter the Heaviside Layer and be reborn.
The film’s visuals do stay true those of the play, though, as productions often see performers don skin-tight catsuits. Premiering at the New London Theater in 1981, Cats is an adaptation of T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum's Book of Practical Cat, a book of philosophical musings on the nature of cats by the renowned poet.
The film boasts an impressive cast, including Francesca Hayward, Judi Dench, Jason Derulo, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Ian McKellen, Taylor Swift and Rebel Wilson. Directed by Tom Hooper, Cats is slated to release in theaters Dec. 20.
