Castlevania is one of the most beloved video games from the 80s. Although the series has changed a lot, from the gameplay to the characters involved, it's crucial elements has always stuck around since the first entry. It is a Gothic horror where characters have to kill the vampire Dracula at the end of their respective game. Thankfully the Castlevania animation not only succeeded in this but has blown expectations with its three seasons. But despite that, liberties had to be made and not everything is accurate.

As such, here are the 5 things that are accurate to the video game and 5 things where it isn't.

10 Accurate: The Time Period

In the original version of Castlevania 3, the fight against Dracula took place primarily within Wallachia which it seems the Netflix show maintains as well. Although the majority of the Castlevania Netflix show takes place in the fictional city of Gresit followed by the town of Lindenfeld, it is still relative to the general area of the Castlevania universe.

What's more, as this is an adaptation of Castlevania 3 specifically, it also takes place within the year 1476 and has a gothic feel which is accurate to the video game.

9 Not Accurate: The Main Cast

Simon Belmont and friends in the animated Castlevania on Netflix

For starters, one of the characters from the Castlevania 3 cast is not present, primarily Grant Danasty. What's more, each of the characters, while fairly true in terms of appearance and the like isn't entirely the same as the video games.

Trevor Belmont is a complete jerk and a drunk which isn't like the games, as is the personalities for each character in general being a little different from their counterparts. However, as this is based on the third Castlevania game where there aren't any voice lines and the games that came afterwards take place after a time skip, it is forgivable and quite enjoyable anyways.

8 Accurate: The Village Not Liking The Belmonts

A brief blurb from the Castlevania lore shows that the Belmonts were exiled from society prior to 1476, due to their powers in dealing with the supernatural. The show does flavor this up and gives more context to it. The church had essentially cast them out partly due to being corrupt and having the Belmont clan be nearly exterminated.

Despite this extra build-up, the core aspect of the people fearing the Belmonts for their abilities remain intrinsically the same.

7 Not Accurate: The Morningstar

The famous Vampire Killer that had been present in the Castlevania franchise since the first game isn't present in the Netflix show. At least not in the way most people are familiar with. A magical leather whip specifically designed to kill vampires, after a couple of upgrades it turns into a powerful mace whip.

While the leather whip is still present in the Netflix show, it has never been exactly stated if it was the actual Vampire Killer. What's more, a new weapon which represents its fully upgraded form is present called the Morningstar, which makes supernatural creatures explode.

6 Accurate: Alucard

As much as the personalities aren't exactly the same as their counterparts, that doesn't mean that they aren't the same characters that gamers know and love. Case in point is Alucard, who not only looks similar to his appearance during Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night but also showcases the many abilities of the vampire.

What's more, despite his bickering with Trevor Belmont, he still maintains a respectful and relaxed demeanor seen in the majority of his appearances in the games.

5 Not Accurate: Carmilla

Carmilla and Hector

Carmilla is a very interesting case. Where it could be argued that the change done to her is one of the most drastic decisions in the animated series, it could also be argued it's for the best. In the video games, she's a minion of Dracula and is a boss character. She is also very loyal to him.

However, in the Netflix show she's one of his strongest generals and also the one that questions Dracula's rule the most. Thereby plotting to overthrow him herself, such as tricking Hector to her side. All viewers have to wait for now is for her giant skull to make an appearance.

4 Accurate: Dracula

Although treated as more of a tragic figure this time around, similar to his son Alucard, a vast majority of Dracula's character has been kept intact. From his Gothic appearance to his love for his wife and his vast knowledge.

But what is by far his most prominent and most obvious trait is his immense hatred for humanity. Thankfully not only does the Netflix show highlight this greatly, but also turns Dracula into a tragic and sympathetic character. Almost making audiences root for Dracula rather than be against him.

3 Not Accurate: Saint Germaine

Saint Germaine is one of the greatest characters in Castlevania Season 3, thanks to his smooth-talking and mysterious past. He is also the key to opening the door to the multiverse which it seems the series itself has been building up to.

However, in the video games he is a little different. Not only is he designed much differently compared to his counterpart but he isn't a character who discovers the corridors of the multiverse but is actually a time traveller from the future.

2 Accurate: The Stakes Of Every Battle

Castlevania being an easy game franchise is a foreign concept. The series is known for battering gamers down and bringing them to their knees. Castlevania 3 in particular is one of the hardest games in the franchise and can be borderline cheap depending on who gamers talk to.

That's why it is incredible to see this play out in the Castlevania animated universe. Every encounter the characters fight against will always leave them battered and bruised. Virtually nobody gets out unscathed. They earn their victories.

1 Not Accurate: Hector

Hector Castlevania

Hector may be a secondary character in the Netflix show but in the video game universe he is one of the protagonists. A character who betrayed Dracula after having enough killing three years ago which resulted in his first defeat, he eventually came to a life of his own where he later had a human lover.

Although the Netflix show portrays Hector as being very human, he seems to be indifferent with the human race as a whole rather than taking up a lover. What's more, he is currently in a relationship with Lenore who is a vampire. Well, he was until he became her slave.
