WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Castlevania Season 3, streaming now on Netflix.

Netflix's Castlevania dives deep into religion, science and the philosophies writer Warren Ellis loves scribing, based on the internal war within the souls of mankind. His work here dissects the nature of man and monster, shaping institutions in the 1400s such as the Catholic Church as something very sinister. Some of it is tied to real history and some to his personal beliefs, and once more, it appears in Season 3 with the Priory in Lindenfeld.

This church has been corrupted and is now being used as an instrument of destruction, which leaves Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades trying to clean it up after they started hunting Night Creatures in the wake of Dracula's demise. In the process, they're befriended by the German town's lord, the Judge, and while at first, he seems to be heroic, when the town's eventually saved our monster hunters realize he's the most sadistic villain they've encountered this season.

Trevor and Sypha, due to their spiritual connection with hunting these creatures, are drawn to the Priory. Soon enough, they discover that one of the Night Creatures that escaped Dracula's legion last season is housed underneath as they dig deeper with Saint Germain, an old aristocrat and researcher. It turns out beneath the Priory is a gateway to the Infinite Corridor, which would allow pedestrians to traverse space and time. The Night Creature has corrupted the monks there and they've given up faith in God. Instead, becoming a cult that wants to use the doorway to resurrect the vampire king.

The Judge arranges soldiers to fight alongside Trevor and Sypha and in the last few episodes, they do battle with the Night Creature and the monsters it brings over from hell. The cult kills off many families in the town, and the evil souls empower the monsters, which leaves the Judge scrambling against the cult leader, Sala. Eventually, Trevor, Sypha and the anti-Priory kill the beasts and shut the gateway that bars a Dracula return, leaving Germain inside to find a loved one.

However, Sala stabs the Judge, mortally wounding him. The Judge tells him that he forgives him as he lost his way and reveals a secret way out the town, through the forest and past an apple tree. When Trevor and Sypha meet the dying Judge, he admits his town was always going to be lost and asks them to burn his private chambers so Lindenfeld wouldn't be remembered as a place for the wicked.

As they head there, they find the apple tree but then the series takes a grim turn when a trap is also revealed to be there, into which Sala fell. The Judge had spikes hidden, covered by straw and dirt, so anyone who approached the tree would fall in and be impaled. They find Sala dead but Sypha notices small bones she thinks are animals. When they head to the Judge's house, their instincts tell them to investigate the rooms and when they do, they find a secret chamber with items belonging to young kids, particularly boys. Sypha's in shock as she realizes the bones she saw by the tree were children's.

Immediately, this throws fans back to when the Judge found a little boy in the village, a vagabond who stole apples and other things, and sent the miscreant to the tree. It seemed, at the time, that he felt sorry for the lad, and as an act of mercy told him to pick no more than three. But now we know he didn't want troublemakers in his village and was sentencing them to a quiet death away from the town. Even more horrific is that Trevor notes that with the beds and the layout of the home, and how this room was kept hidden away, it's clear he also forced himself on the kids.

Trevor recalls the Judge speaking about how he enjoyed "little pleasures," and by this point, it's obvious he was a predator who met his fate by dying at the hands of a fellow monster. Trevor also reminds Sypha as they leave Lindenfeld, burning the house down, that she lives in an idealistic mental box as a Speaker, and what she just saw was his reality, where men often prove they're just as bad as the demons of the night they fight.

Castlevania Season 3 on Netflix stars Richard Armitage as Trevor Belmont, Alejandra Reynoso as Sypha Belnades, James Callis as Alucard and Graham McTavish as Dracula.
