‘Castlevania’ Getting a ‘Super Violent’ Animated Series From Adi Shankhar

A planned live-action adaptation of the long-running video game series “Castlevania” toiled in development for nearly a decade, but ultimately went nowhere. However, producer Adi Shankhar thinks he’ll have more luck with an animated miniseries.

The producer of “Dredd” and the “Punisher: Dirty Laundry” and “Power/Rangers” shorts has announced he’s developing a “super violent” adaptation of 1989’s “Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse” with Frederator, the animation studio behind “Adventure Time,” “Bravest Warriors” and “Fairly OddParents.”

Asked just how much gore and violence this “super violent” miniseries will have, Shankar told Collider, “There will be a lot.  The goal is to bring hard hitting anime to the America and be America’s first animated series for adults.” For influences of style and tone, he pointed to “Akira,” “Ghost in the Shell,” “Ninja Scroll” and “Young Justice.”

A prequel to the original game, “Castlevania III” follows Trevor Belmont, wielder of the Vampire Killer Whip, as he sets out to defeat Dracula with the help of young sorceress Sypha Belnades and Dracula’s son Alucard.
