The Netflix adaptation of the gaming franchise Castlevania landed on the popular streaming platform in 2017 and has since earned many worldwide fans. Voiced by a stellar cast that includes The Hobbit's Richard Armitage and Graham McTavish, the series tells the story of a war waged on mankind by the lord of darkness Vlad Dracula Tepes.

The first two seasons focus on the quest to defeat Dracula, with monster hunter Trevor Belmont, dhampir Alucard, and Speaker Sylpha Belnades teaming up against Alucard's own father, Dracula. Subsequent seasons center on the threat of Dracula's return, created by other villains. But if there's anything the series always makes clear, it's that all the bloodshed is caused by a very human emotion in Dracula's love for his human wife, Lisa. It's something he shows many times throughout Castlevania, in many different ways.

10 He Welcomes Her In His Castle & Teaches Her Science

Vlad and Lisa Castlevania

The series starts with the intrepid Lisa of Lupu knocking at the gates of Vlad Tepes's castle. She is searching for someone to teach her science and has heard that an ancient scholar lives in the castle, someone who could help her in her quest. Vlad is taken aback by her determination and lack of fear.

He doesn't hide his true nature from her, and when she doesn't cower from him, he welcomes her into his sanctuary and agrees to share with her his many secrets. She is as fascinated by his genius as he is by the strange human who has dared to show up at his castle in the pursuit of knowledge.

9 He Doesn’t Turn Her Into A Vampire

Vlad and Lisa get married and the two have a son, Adrian, who later gains the name Alucard. They are very much in love, but Vlad couldn't have missed the fact that she is mortal, whereas he is not. And yet, he doesn't turn her into a vampire. It's one of the first things vampire Carmilla points out when she joins Dracula's court in his quest to destroy humanity.

It seems counter-productive for a vampire to marry a human and not make her immortal. And yet, the fact that he doesn't do this shows that his feelings for her are genuine. Vlad respects Lisa's humanity and loves her as she truly is. The difference in their species doesn't matter to him. He must have wanted to turn her into a vampire since it would have been safer. But if he'd done that, she wouldn't have been able to pursue her dream to be a doctor.

8 He Agrees To Her Request To Go Travel

Lisa acknowledges that her husband is a vampire and has committed many terrifying massacres, but she believes she can change him for the better. To this end, she asks him to go on a journey as a man, to get to know humanity and learn their ways. He agrees to her request, even though his feelings for the human race weren't the kindest before meeting her. It's a request that dooms them, as well as countless other people. In his absence, Lisa is taken by the church and burnt at the stake.

7 He Warns Lisa’s Patient To Leave Wallachia

Dracula receives news of Lisa's death from peasant woman Castlevania

After his return to Targoviste, Vlad finds their cottage burned down and Lisa missing. An old woman approaches him and tells him that Lisa has been executed. She is there to pay her respects to Lisa and place flowers on the wreck of the cottage. Furious and grief-stricken, Vlad still finds enough composure to warn the woman to leave Wallachia.

6 He Cries Tears Of Blood When He Realizes The Truth

The extent of Vlad's pain and fury is clearly shown by the heart-wrenching sight of him crying tears of blood. Love isn't a kind emotion, and never has an image shown that more clearly. It can be dangerous and poisonous, and this kind of fierce and brutal love is what Vlad feels for Lisa.

5 He Launches Into A Campaign Of Genocide After Lisa's Death

Dracula on fire Castlevania

Driven mad by the loss of his wife, Vlad decides to punish humanity itself for the actions of the church. One year after Lisa's death, the hordes of hell descend upon Wallachia. He summons vampires from all over the world to include in his campaign, and the carnage spreads faster and faster. Dracula's night creatures massacre countless humans, and still, it is not enough to avenge her.

4 He's A Mess Without Her

Dracula's red eyes Castlevania

From the moment he learns of Lisa's death, Dracula loses his mind. He comes very close to killing his son when Alucard first tries to dissuade him from his plan. Later, both his vampire subordinate Godbrand and Alucard himself make a note that his campaign of human genocide is nothing more than the world's longest suicide note. In the end, he achieves his purpose, as he dies at his son's hand.

3 He Apologizes To Her During During His Confrontation With Alucard

Dracula vs Alucard

Toward the end of the series, Dracula almost kills Alucard again when he, Sypha, and Trevor attack him in his castle. Their confrontation spills into Alucard's childhood room, and it is at that point that Dracula understands what he is doing. He's fighting a deadly battle against his own son, the most beautiful gift Lisa has given him.

Filled with remorse and horror, he recovers slightly from his insanity, apologizing to Lisa for his actions. He allows Alucard to get close to him and stake him through the chest, thereby ending his rampage. In the aftermath, Dracula turns to ash, and the only thing he leaves behind is his wedding ring.

2 Once Dead, He Tracks Her Down In Hell

Dracula and Lisa hug in Hell Castlevania

Even with Dracula dead, the threat to humanity isn't over. Dracula's former forces want to bring him back and will do anything in their power to achieve their goal. In two separate instances, they open portals to Hell, revealing Dracula holding onto his lost wife. It's later revealed that, after his death, he immediately goes to track her down.

The dark spirit that embodies death acknowledges their love, even if in a twisted way by planning to shove both their souls into a Rebis, an androgynous artificial body created through alchemy. It's only because of the intervention of Alucard, Trevor, and Sypha that Vlad and Lisa are freed from such a twisted fate.

The epilogue of the final season takes everyone by surprise when it reveals Dracula and Lisa together again, this time in the mortal realm. Upon being freed from the Rebis, their souls are able to regain their own bodies. No real explanation for this is given, but it would appear that both are here to stay. In an almost amusing twist, they decide to not return to their castle and instead make plans to travel to Whitby, England, the setting of Bram Stoker's Dracula.
