The Stephen King adaptation Castle Rock will return for a second season on Hulu.

Hulu Senior Vice President and Head of Content Craig Erwich has revealed that the popular series has been renewed for a second season and will adopt an anthology format moving forward. As such, the new season will have a "wholly original" story while still retaining its inspiration from Stephen King's vast library of work.

"It was a deeply original idea from two of the world’s greatest storytellers, and it was centered around something that’s been beloved and familiar to many of Stephen King’s legion of fans, which is the town of Castle Rock," explained Erwich in an interview with Variety about the show's origins from King and executive producer JJ Abrams. "The reaction from the variety of audiences has been overwhelming and it seems to be one of the most talked about shows of the summer."

The premium streaming service revealed the series has become the platform's most successful original series for a first season to date since its premiere last month. Hulu's partnership with King first began with a miniseries adaptation of King's novel 11.22.63 in 2016 which has similarly seen a noticeable increase in viewers since Castle Rock's premiere.

Taking place in the eponymous, fictional Maine town, the first season of Castle Rock follows several disparate individuals drawn together as supernatural occurrences begin escalating to lethal effect. The series includes and remixes familiar elements across King's extensive work from The Shining to Pet Sematary.

"We have the ability to create a whole Stephen King experience," Erwich observed. "I think [that] will accumulate over time."

Castle Rock, executive produced by JJ Abrams and Stephen King, streams new episodes every Wednesday on Hulu. The first season stars André Holland, Melaine Lynskey, Bill Skarsgård, Jane Levy, and Sissy Spacek.
