Evo 2019 revealed the final character of the season pass for SoulCalibur VI. It was the highly requested fan favorite, Cassandra. While it was exciting to see the introduction of Haohmaru and a second season pass, Cassandra was the perfect way to end the first batch of DLC. When SoulCalibur VI was originally released, there was an uproar when Cassandra wasn't included. Some claimed her sister, Sophitia, was a close enough replacement. This was met with even more uproar and contention. The controversy was big enough that her inclusion in the game was essentially a given and this news does not come as a surprise.

Nevertheless, despite all of the discussion surrounding the character, there are plenty of people who are unfamiliar with her, especially since her last appearance, SoulCalibur IV, was over a decade ago. So let's breakdown the character and give her a full overview, including her origin, personality, previous appearances, design, fighting style, roster connections and some trivia. This is Cassandra, SoulCalibur VI's newest character, explained!

ORIGIN

Cassandra SoulCalibur

Cassandra Alexandra debuted in SoulCalibur II. She is the younger sister of Sophitia Alexandra. She begins her journey to destroy Soul Edge as a means to relieve her sister from having to serve Hephaestus and destroying the evil sword.

In order to do this, she steals the sacred weapons, the Omega Sword and Nemea Shield, from Hephaestus' shrine. Her only clue is a piece of Soul Edge that she found in Sophitia's house that radiated upon coming in contact with the shrine.

PERSONALITY

Cassandra SoulCalibur

Unlike her sister Sophitia who tends to be quiet and reserved, Cassandra is free-spirited and playful. She also has a strong determination about her and won't mince her words. As a result, she can come across as brash and confrontational. She is also rather confident in her abilities, which can sometimes make her be single-minded and unusually tough.

She is not without compassion as she loves her sister and family very much. Like her sister, she uses her strength to protect her family name and honor. However, she does not do so in the name of Hephaestus or any other Grecian god. She is not a devoutly religious person like her sister. Instead, she has a strong sense of belief in herself and her own abilities and believes her own actions and choices determine her destiny.

SOULCALIBUR III APPEARANCE

Cassandra SoulCalibur

Cassandra would return for SoulCalibur III and IV. After venturing off to find Soul Edge in her sister's place, she happened upon a city that had fallen into chaos due to the evil sword's influence. She resolved to help the citizens of the city out but suddenly her sword and shield cracked. Without a competent weapon to assist her, she turned back and returned home to Greece.

When she got back she learned that Sophitia had left to find Soul Edge again. Upset her sister was after the sword yet again, she resolved to help her with her quest. She had Sophitia's husband and her brother-in-law Rothion, a skilled blacksmith, craft her a new sword and shield, the Digamma Sword and Nemea Shield. Then she set off after her sister.

SOULCALIBUR IV APPEARANCE

Cassandra SoulCalibur

In SoulCalibur IV, Cassandra returned to the city she wanted to help. She searched for clues to Soul Edge and for a cure for the remaining citizens. One night, she was ambushed by a man with glowing red eyes. Although she won the duel, he succeeded in stealing her piece of Soul Edge. The man, who we now know was Raphael, mocked her for not having the power of the "Holy Stone."

After the encounter, she found people in the city that had regained their sanity. They claimed it was due to a shining blue crystal. Thinking it had something to do with the "Holy Stone" Raphael had mentioned, she began looking for clues for the stone. She eventually learned of a man carrying a mass of crystal as big as he was. He was headed to Ostrheinsburg so she took up pursuit.

Upon entering Ostrheinsburg Castle, she was stopped by Sophitia, who had surrendered to Soul Edge after her daughter was taken hostage. She knocked her out in one strike and didn't wake up until Soul Edge had been destroyed. Limping through the castle as it contracted due to Soul Edge's destruction, she found Sophitia unconscious in one of the rooms. Suddenly, a rift to another dimension opened before her. Moments later, the castle returned to normal but Cassandra was nowhere to be seen.

CAMEOS AND NON-CANON APPEARANCES

SoulCalibur Cassandra

Cassandra technically makes her first appearance in the first game in the franchise, Soul Blade. She is seen in Sophitia's Edge Master ending, working as a baker. In the tennis game Smash Court Tennis Pro Tournament 2, she along with Raphael and Heihachi from the Tekken series are unlockable characters. Namco released an omake manga in order to explain the new mechanics in SoulCalibur IV. In this comedic manga, Cassandra is "teaching" Hilde as she is a "veteran" of the series now.

Cassandra also makes appearances in non-canon SoulCalibur games. In SoulCalibur: Broken Destiny, a free-to-play game released on the PlayStation 3, she appears in a side story. She and Hilde are looking for ingredients to make a potion that will cure Hilde's father.

Cassandra is also one of the main characters of the iOS mobile game SoulCalibur: Unbreakable Soul. Alongside Edge Master, the two go searching for broken fragments of Soul Edge in a parallel world. When she meets Sophitia in this world, she's glad she's alive in this world but wonders if she will see her true sister ever again. This suggests that SoulCalibur: Unbreakable Soul takes place after SoulCalibur IV but whether or not this is canon is unknown.

All of her endings in SoulCalibur II, III, and IV are non-canon and show her destroying Soul Edge and in the case of SoulCalibur IV, SoulCalibur as well, breaking her weapon and then returning home. SoulCalibur III adds in an extra scene that shows her successfully getting away with breaking the Omega Sword or not, depending on if you do the button prompt.

CURRENT APPEARANCE

SoulCalibur Cassandra

SoulCalibur VI's story is a soft reboot of sorts, creating an alternate timeline starting from the first SoulCalibur. As such, Cassandra appears in SoulCalibur VI as a baker, trying to run the family business while Sophitia is away. She goes and sees Rothion, Sophitia's fiancé, to repair the sacred Omega Sword and Nemea Shield and successfully gets him to confess that Sophitia has gone after Soul Edge again.

Enraged, she goes out searching for her. She encounters many of Sophitia's enemies before coming back home to find Sophitia having returned safely. Cassandra and Sophitia battle to test each other and while Cassandra wins. With the understanding that each needs to do what they need to be happy, Cassandra promises to help Sophitia with her quest and attends her wedding. The two also ask her to name their firstborn.

However, in a flashback, we find out Cassandra is approached through an Astral Fissure by the previous timeline's Cassandra. After Sophitia's death at the end of SoulCalibur IV and the events of SoulCalibur V involving her niece and nephew, Cassandra's mental state has deteriorated. She is nonsensical and attacks the current timeline Cassandra and loses. She warns the current Cassandra of the eventual events and pleads her to save Sophitia. Beaten up, she resolves to help her sister, but not before visiting Rothion to fix her weapons and get info out of him.

ADDITIONAL BACKSTORY

Cassandra SoulCalibur

Currently, it is unknown how long Cassandra has been in the other dimension after SoulCalibur IV. But with the events of SoulCalibur VI, some things can be inferred. Firstly, the other dimension is most likely the Astral Chaos that is discussed multiple times in SoulCalibur VI.

Secondly, however long she was in the Astral Chaos, it must have transformed her into a malfested -- a being corrupted by Soul Edge. This depends lastly on whether or not SoulCalibur: Unbreakable Soul is canon or not but with no mention of her being in SoulCalibur V, which takes place decades after SoulCalibur IV, it's possible she was trapped in the Astral Chaos for decades.

DESIGN

SoulCalibur Cassandra

Cassandra has short blonde hair with bangs, sometimes worn up or down, and green eyes, switched to silver hair and grey eyes in SoulCalibur III. She has a slim figure, meant to demonstrate her more acrobatic approach in her fighting style, although SoulCalibur VI increases her bust size.

Cassandra always has a bounce to her step and this along with her hairstyle is meant to evoke youth and playfulness, while her brashness and lack of finesse signify a bratty and immature personality.

COSTUMES

SoulCalibur Cassandra

In SoulCalibur II, she wore a white and blue sleeveless dress while her alternate switches the color to green. Her bonus outfit makes her look like a Valkyrie.

In SoulCalibur III, her default costume is the same as the original design in SoulCalibur II, but with a purple jacket and white shirt underneath. Her alternate costume is an orange dress. In SoulCalibur IV, she wears a purple dress with no skirt while her second outfit is a shirt over a green tunic and a white and green skirt. Her outfit in SoulCalibur: Lost Swords is the same as her first outfit in SoulCalibur IV.

Finally, in SoulCalibur VI, she has on a white and orange dress. She also carries around a cat-eye mask to sometimes mask her identity. Her second color changes the white and orange to black and pink while her third color is technically her malfested form as her hair is white and her eyes are red. Finally, her fourth color looks like her original design, complete with her hair down.

FIGHTING STYLE

SoulCalibur Cassandra

Cassandra is a self-taught Athenian style warrior. She's a balanced rushdown character with both fast and powerful moves and high combo potential. She has a good mix of short and long-range attacks, several stun attacks and is also quite nimble. She will not only use her sword and shield to attack enemies but her butt as well, similar to her sister.

Her weak points are the short-range of her weapon and her lack of defense as well as defensive options. Nevertheless, on a professional level, she is considered to be high to top tier.

ROSTER CONNECTIONS

Sophitia SoulCalibur Cassandra

Cassandra is Sophitia's sister, as well as aunt to SoulCalibur V's Patroklos and Pyrrha. She knows Taki from when she brought Sophitia back after her battle with Cervantes in Soul Blade. In SoulCalibur IV, she meets Raphael when he attacked her, she meets and travels with Rock, and she shadows Siegfried.

TRIVIA

SoulCalibur Cassandra

Cassandra was born on July 20, 1570, in Athens, Ottoman Empire (present-day Greece). She's 21-years old and constantly claims to have lost weight recently. She likely takes her name from the prophet of Homer's The Iliad. Cassandra means "shining upon men" while her last name means "Protector of Mankind."

In the Soul Edge Official Handbook, Cassandra is said to be the reincarnation of the Greek goddess Aphrodite, but this has been rendered non-canon. Cassandra has more joke weapons than any character in the franchise.

In SoulCalibur II, her weapons Red Crystal Rod & Red Line Shield and Valkyrie are references to the Namco games, The Tower of Druaga and Valkyrie no Boken: Toki no Kagi Densetsu respectively and one of her bonus outfit is also a nod to the latterOne of the lines the announcer make before a match says that she chooses her path like a "Free Bird," which is an obvious reference to the famous song by Lynyrd Skynyrd.
