The Case Study of Vanitas is one of 2021's most hyped new anime series, and the original manga's creator and the show's director have released statements to celebrate the premiere of supernatural show.
The series premiered on July 3 and is based on a manga series originally written and illustrated by Jun Mochizuki, who is also known for her work on Pandora Hearts. According to Funimation, who distributes the show in North America, Mochizuki expressed her excitement for the anime adaptation of her work by saying, "The show has been blessed with a more-than-amazing crew, and while I keenly feel the pressure as the original creator, as a viewer, I can’t wait to see The Case Study of Vanitas as portrayed by director Tomoyuki Itamura!"
The Case Study of Vanitas tells the story of Noe Archeviste, a vampire who is ordered by his patron, the father of the famous Marquis de Sade, to investigate another vampire known only as Vanitas and the mysterious grimoire he carries, which reportedly has the ability to cure vampires of their deadly bloodlust. An illustration featuring the airheaded Noe and the arrogant Vanitas was also released by the show's staff to celebrate the premiere:
The anime is directed by Tomoyuki Itamura, who is best known for his work on the Monogatari franchise. The multitalented Deko Akao, who previously worked on anime such as My Little Monster, Noragami and Gintama, serves as the series' scriptwriter. The show's score is provided by acclaimed composer Yuki Kajiura, who previously composed music for Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba, and many, many more. The series is animated by studio BONES, which is best known for its work on shows such as both Fullmetal Alchemist anime series, My Hero Academia, and Ouran High School Host Club.
Director Itamura described the series by saying, "The story unfolds around the pompous Vanitas and scatterbrained Noé, who have a rather reserved relationship reminiscent of Holmes and Watson. While they adopt cheery demeanors, it is apparent that the shadow of the past looms over each of them." Itamura added, "The keywords here are 19th-century Paris, vampires, and steampunk. There is also a slightly gothic horror and dark fantasy atmosphere superimposed upon Parisian decadence. Our current place in time where we feel locked up makes me want you to experience their adventures in Paris all the more."
The Case Study of Vanitas is currently airing in Japan and is being simulcast with English subtitles by Funimation.
