If you've always thought that Han Solo and Princess Leia had wild romantic tension in the original "Star Wars" trilogy, then this news should get a big "of course" from you. It turns out that yes, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford had an affair during the filming of 1977's "Star Wars."
The reveal comes courtesy of People and Fisher's upcoming memoir, "The Princess Diarist." The relationship was chronicled in Fisher's journals, which she kept in 1976 as she was filming the first "Star Wars" film.
Fisher decided to finally reveal their relationship when she turned those journals into her new book. "It's been 40 years," she explained, and she's kept it secret for that entire time. “I didn’t say anything to anybody for years but it’s not like anyone’s deeply affected by it anymore.”
The three-month affair occurred while the pair were filming "Star Wars" in 1976, when she was 19 and he was a married 33-year-old with two kids. "It was so intense," said Fisher. "It was Han and Leia during the week, and Carrie and Harrison during the weekend." Apparently, the two first hooked up following director George Lucas' birthday party in May of that year. In her journal, Fisher wrote about the experience: “I looked over at Harrison. A hero’s face — a few strands of hair fell over his noble, slightly furrowed brow. How could you ask such a shining specimen of a man to be satisfied with the likes of me?”
Fisher told People that she looks back on the relationship fondly. “I was so inexperienced, but I trusted something about him,” said Fisher. “He was kind.”
The relationship ended with the end of the first "Star Wars," which obviously will lead fans to look at the chemistry between Ford and Fisher in 1980's "Empire Strikes Back" in a whole new light. That film documented Han and Leia's tense relationship, as the pair's heated arguments throughout the film culminated in a the iconic "I love you," "I know" exchange right at the film's darkest moment.
Fisher gave Harrison Ford a heads up about the reveal, though, and sent him a draft of "The Princess Diarist" before this went public. “I would never want to embarrass him," said Fisher. “Harrison’s very private, but I think I waited an appropriate amount of time. How much longer could I wait?”
Ford hasn't commented on it yet. "The Princess Diarist" arrives in stores on November 22.
