Carol Sutton, who appeared in many Hollywood films and television shows across her long acting career, has died of complications from coronavirus (COVID-19) in New Orleans. Sutton was 76.

The celebrated actor was in the hospital for treatment, according to BBC News. She died on Thursday evening.

One of Sutton's final roles was on Season 1 of Lovecraft Country. She played the widow Ms. Osberta, a friend of Tic's cousin Ethel, in the seventh episode, "I Am".

Sutton was especially beloved in her hometown of New Orleans, LA, where she lived all her life and began her career on the stage at the Dashiki Project Theatre in the 1960s. Mayor LaToya Cantrell said in a tribute to Sutton that she was "practically the queen of New Orleans theatre."

In 1974, Sutton starred in The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pitman, one of her many roles in media that highlighted Black struggles and civil rights. She was also known for 1989's Steel Magnolias, in which she played alongside Dolly Parton and Julia Roberts as Nurse Pam, 2011's The Help and others such as 21 Jump Street, Monster's Ball, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and Ray.

Television series that featured appearances from Sutton include Queen Sugar, True Detective, Scream, Roots and American Horror Story. Ava DuVernay, director of Queen Sugar, spoke on Sutton's death to honor her performance on the show, saying "May she rise and rest in peace and power."
